Chapter 3 First Encounter

  • MAVERICK’s POV
  • I was in my room staring at a picture frame of my lover, My wife. She has always been the light of my world, and now she is dead. She was killed brutally, and the fact I have not been able to identify the ones who did that to her made me feel rather useless.
  • “Maverick, there are some men..”
  • My sister barged into my room and saw me kneeling before my wife’s pictures. She exhaled deeply, moved closer to me, and began to shed tears.
  • “Maverick, you need to move on, please. It's been years”
  • “Yes, and I have been unable to find her killers”
  • I looked up at her face, and she cocked her head.
  • I stood up, walked to my desk, took my phone, and stepped out of my room with my sister behind me.
  • When we got downstairs I met some police officers and some other men in black.
  • “Good day, gentlemen”
  • I carefully said to them knowing fully well what they were there for. It was either about the false allegations placed on my hotel or the fact I had to step down from my position as a Mafia Don since I lost my father.
  • “Mr. Maverick, some new evidence just came to light, and we need you in the station”
  • I chuckled and then looked at my sister who was frightened.
  • “I am not coming anywhere with you. Today is my wife’s memorial. The same wife all the men y’all work for killed!”
  • I exclaimed angrily.
  • ************
  • On my private jet with my sister who insisted on coming with me. I was on my way to Las Vegas, the root of all my problems. When I stood my ground and told the officers I would not go with them they left and I received a little tip about my father’s friend who lived in Las Vegas, and could be of help to me and my family. I should be the last person taking tips from people, but I had no choice.
  • We landed in Las Vegas, but of course, my sister insisted on eating at a Chinese restaurant, and we had to go to one.
  • When they served us the dish I was unable to eat any of it, so I stepped outside to make a quick call.
  • “Marcos, where did you say to go?” I scoffed and bowed my head. “And I hope I can trust you, right?”
  • “I will send you an address, and yes you can trust me. Hey, keep a low profile while you are at it. A lot of people want your family wiped out..”
  • I ended the call before he could utter another word.
  • When I turned around to go back inside I saw a little girl staring at me without blinking.
  • “Are you lost, little one?”
  • “You are not American, and no, my mummy owns this place”
  • I lifted my head, looked at the building, and nodded my head.
  • “Your mummy is one lucky woman, and yes, I am not American. Smart kid”
  • I held the little girl's shoulder, but before I knew what was happening I was punched seriously in the ear, and I almost dropped to the ground. But I stood up furiously.
  • “What the fuck..,” I almost screamed, but I looked at the Child's face and swallowed back my words. “Who are you?!”
  • I screamed at the lady who punched my ear, but there was one thing I noticed about her aside from the fact she stood firmly without moving a shoulder, she looked familiar, way too familiar.
  • She looks like her, It is Her.
  • “Did he hurt you, baby? Come here”
  • She pulled the little girl behind her legs without breaking eye contact with me.
  • “I am not a kidnapper, madam. You should apologize for hitting me”
  • “You should not touch random kids, maybe that way you will save yourself from headbutts”
  • Before I could say another word, my sister walked out of the restaurant and held my hands. She looked as confused as I did.
  • “Hey, kid. What is your name?,” I asked, but the lady would not let the child speak to me. “Seems your mummy has a problem with me. I will leave then”
  • I decided to leave with my sister, but the little child screamed at me.
  • “My name is Natalia, and my mummy’s name is Lena (Luna)”
  • “Natalia, keep quiet!”
  • The lady angrily pulled her daughter back into the building, while Amelia and I had a good laugh about it.
  • We got back into the car, but my mind was still clouded with the face of that woman. That was the woman from the bar years ago, right? It had to be her.
  • “Where to, brother?” Amelia said then she smacked my hand as I was deep in thought.
  • I shoved my phone in the face of the driver and showed him the address. He nodded and started to drive.
  • It was a rather long drive, but it was not so boring because I played memories I spent with my wife in my head, and I was happy. That has always been my happy place.
  • “How long before we get there? It is getting quite late, don't you think so, Maverick?”
  • My sister tapped my thighs and I nodded.
  • “A few more minutes, ma'am”
  • The driver assured her, and it didn't take long before we got to the house.
  • We rang the doorbell, but no one answered. I gave Amelia a hand glove and I also put one on. There was something suspicious about the whole thing. The gate and the door to the house were both unbolted.
  • “This feels like a scripted show”
  • My eyes wandered around the place to check for CCTV cameras, but there were none.
  • When we got into the house we saw a man lying down on the floor in a pool of blood.
  • “Oh, my God!”
  • Amelia screamed and hugged me tightly.
  • “It is a trap, they set me up again! We need to get out of here”
  • “We didn't do anything!”
  • Amelia protested.
  • “I am one of the most wanted men alive. No one will ever believe my side of the story. They knew I was coming, they laid a trap and we walked right into it”
  • “Who is ‘They’?”
