Chapter 39 Thirty-nine

  • Four weeks after the warehouse, Dante finally comes home. I support his weight as we walk through the mansion, his arm heavy across my shoulders. He moves slowly, still weak from his injury.
  • The doctors warned against exertion, but he insisted on leaving the hospital. "I need to be home," he said. "With you and Matteo." Now, with each careful step toward his bedroom, I feel the warmth of his body against mine, the familiar scent of him that once meant safety, then betrayal, and now something more complicated.
