Chapter 25 Twenty-five

  • Every footstep in the corridor makes my heart beat faster. I've been watching the clock for nearly an hour, counting seconds, praying that Amanda arrives before Dante returns from wherever he's gone. He is probably speaking with Dr. Whitman, which buys me time, but not much.
  • I've disconnected the heart rate monitor from my finger claiming it was uncomfortable, so the nurses won't be alerted by my racing pulse. My hospital gown clings to my back, damp with nervous sweat. I keep one hand on my belly, feeling Matteo's occasional movements.
  • "Hang on, little one," I whisper. "We're getting out of here."
