• The highway opened up ahead of us, stretching out like a long black ribbon beneath a sky that was finally clearing.
• I kept my hands steady at ten and two on the leather steering wheel of the executive SUV, my eyes scanning the road and the rearview mirror every few seconds out of pure habit. The engine hummed low and smooth, completely blocking out the noise of the afternoon traffic we had left behind in the financial district. Behind me, the thick glass privacy partition was rolled halfway down. Nathan was sitting in the rear passenger seat, his tablet resting face-down on his knee, his eyes fixed on the rolling hills passing by the side window.
