Chapter 1 The Weight We Carry
- Nathan POV
- “Hey babe, I’m home!”
- The penthouse swallowed her voice whole. No answer came back, only the smell of Hawaiian ahi poke and mashed potatoes drifting from the breakfast nook, plated and untouched.
- “Welcome, Mrs. Hale.” A housekeeper appeared from the kitchen, head dipping low. “We weren’t told you were coming back today. If we’d known, we would have had the dining room ready.”
- “It’s a surprise.” Isabelle set her purse on the counter, already scanning the room out of habit. “Where’s my husband?”
- “I believe Mr. Hale is upstairs. The study, or the bedroom.”
- “Take my bags up and set the table properly. I’ll go find him myself.”
- She climbed the staircase with a small white box balanced in one hand, Apple Pie à la Mode, his favorite, the kind he used to eat straight from the box at two in the morning back when they still stayed up talking. The bedroom door stood open a few inches. She pushed it wider with two fingers.
- The box hit the floor first.
- Nathan was tangled in the sheets with another man, both of them bare, limbs fitted together in a way that told her everything before her mind could catch up. Not clumsy. Not accidental. Practiced.
- Her hand went to her chest like she could physically hold herself together. She staggered back a step, caught the doorframe, blinked hard against the sting building behind her eyes. And then she saw it. Folded over the chair by the window. A black uniform jacket. A badge clipped to the collar.
- Security.
- She stood there a long moment, absorbing it in silence, watching her husband’s chest rise and fall against another man’s shoulder. Then she wiped her face with the back of her wrist, straightened her spine, and walked back downstairs like nothing at all had happened.
- “Tom.”
- The housekeeper who’d greeted her rushed out from the kitchen. “Yes, Mrs. Hale?”
- “Bring the car around. Pack my bags in the trunk.”
- “I’m sorry, I don’t understand, you just arrived—”
- She looked at him.
- “I’m sorry, ma’am. Right away.”
- She caught the sleeve of another staff member on her way to the door. “When did my husband come home last night?”
- The woman shook her head. “I wasn’t here, Mrs. Hale. He dismissed all of us early yesterday, said he’d be working late and didn’t want to be disturbed.”
- Isabelle nodded once, like the answer confirmed something she’d already decided. “Get the estate driver. Now.”
- —
- In the back seat, the city sliding past the tinted window, she dialed without hesitation.
- “Marcus, it’s Isabelle.”
- “Mrs. Hale, this is unexpected.”
- “I need a divorce filing prepared. Full asset disclosure, standard terms, nothing contested from my end.” Her voice didn’t shake. “Have it on my desk by four.”
- A pause on the line. “Are you certain? We could talk through….”
- “By four, Marcus.”
- She hung up before he could answer, pressed her knuckles against her mouth, and looked out the window until the tears finally came, silent and fast, the kind she’d trained herself years ago never to let anyone see.
- —
- Nathan woke to his phone buzzing against the nightstand, over and over, like it hadn’t stopped in hours.
- He reached for it half asleep, one arm still slung across Ryan’s chest, and squinted at the screen. Fourteen missed calls. Three from his mother. Five from the board’s general line. Two from Marcus, his own family lawyer, which made no sense at seven in the morning. One from a number he didn’t recognize, labeled only Isabelle’s Parents.
- “What’s going on,” Ryan mumbled beside him, voice thick with sleep.
- “I don’t know yet.”
- Nathan sat up, and that was when he saw the notifications stacked on his lock screen, headline after headline, each one worse than the last.
- HALE GROUP CEO CAUGHT IN SCANDAL: SOURCES CONFIRM AFFAIR WITH SECURITY CHIEF
- He unlocked the phone with shaking hands. A gossip account had posted grainy security footage, timestamped from the elevator three weeks ago, the kind of footage that should have been buried in a server nobody could access. Two men. A kiss that left nothing to the imagination. Under it, thousands of comments, multiplying by the second.
- I can’t believe he did this to his poor wife.
- So he’s gay this whole time? What about Isabelle?
- Hale Group stock is going to tank by open market, watch.
- Ryan sat up beside him now, reading over his shoulder, and Nathan felt him go completely still.
- “Nathan.”
- “I know.”
- “How did this get out. That footage was internal, that camera feed doesn’t leave the building…”
- “I know, Ryan.”
- Before either of them could say anything else, the phone rang again in Nathan’s hand. This time he didn’t hesitate. He answered without thinking, some old reflex from thirty-one years of never letting a call from his mother go to voicemail.
- “Mom—”
- Her voice tore through the speaker before he’d even finished the word, sharp enough that Ryan heard it too, sharp enough to fill the whole room.
- “Nathan. What have you done?”
