Chapter 8 Boardroom Execution

  • "If you throw up on my silk tie, Megan, I’ll charge it to your seventy percent," Casian growled, his voice a low, rough rumble inside the quiet confines of the private executive elevator.
  • The display above the doors flickered rapidly as they surged upward toward the fiftieth floor of the Morello Holdings skyscraper: 42... 45... 48...
  • Megan adjusted the lapels of her crisp, ivory-white pantsuit, refusing to give him the satisfaction of seeing her hands shake. Her hyper-sensitive nose was working overtime, bombarded by the distinct scents of industrial floor wax, air conditioning ozone, and the dark, bitter aroma of fear radiating off the three security guards standing silently behind them.
  • "I don't throw up under pressure, Casian," Megan said smoothly, turning her head to meet his cold hazel glare. "And if I do, I’ll make sure it’s on Thomas Vance’s shoes, not your tie."
  • Casian let out a short, dark chuckle. He stepped closer, his broad frame blocking the elevator mirror, his body heat completely enveloping her in the small space. He reached out, his long, warm fingers gripping her chin with firm, unyielding possession, forcing her to look up into his pitch-black eyes.
  • "Listen to me carefully," Casian whispered, his breath hot against her cheek. "The men in that room control billions of dollars in global assets. They don't care about your sad Brooklyn background, and they certainly don't care about my grandfather's romantic sentimentality. They want blood. They want to see if you crumble when they throw legal terms at you."
  • "Then they're going to be severely disappointed," Megan whispered back, her breath hitching as his thumb stroked the soft skin right below her lip, sending a sudden, electric shockwave straight to her core. "I spent three years listening to Arthur explain the inner workings of this company while I prepared his meals. I know where the bodies are buried, Casian. Do you?"
  • Casian’s jaw clenched, his eyes flaring with a dangerous mix of dark frustration and raw, unbridled intrigue. Before he could respond, the elevator chimed sharply.
  • Ding.
  • The heavy double doors slid open, revealing a massive, glass-walled boardroom overlooking the sweeping panorama of Wall Street.
  • Seated around a giant, polished mahogany table were twelve senior board members, all dressed in dark, expensive suits. At the head of the table sat Thomas Vance, his arms folded across his chest, a smug, triumphant smirk plastered across his face. Beside him stood two corporate lawyers holding thick, yellowed legal folders.
  • The moment Casian and Megan stepped onto the plush carpet, the room went dead silent.
  • "Casian," Thomas acknowledged, his voice dripping with false concern as he leaned back in his leather chair. "And... Nona Vance. I’m surprised you had the courage to show up after the SEC notice."
  • "It's Mrs. Morello, Thomas," Casian corrected coldly, his voice carrying an intense, dominant authority that instantly made two younger board members straighten their posture. He didn't offer a chair to Megan; instead, he rested his heavy hand on the small of her bare back, his thumb pressing through her white blazer, anchoring her firmly to his side. "And we are here because I don't tolerate theatrical displays from my board members during market hours."
  • Thomas’s smirk widened, his sharp eyes scanning Megan like a hawk eyeing its prey. "Theatrical? My dear boy, this isn't a show. The SEC was tipped off this morning regarding the validity of Arthur's final signature. We have a certified affidavit from Arthur’s primary physician stating that during his final two weeks, his cognitive abilities were severely impaired by heavy pain medication."
  • A quiet murmur echoed through the boardroom. Several directors exchanged tense glances.
  • Thomas tapped his finger against the yellow folder. "Coercion, Casian. A private chef from Brooklyn, isolated with an elderly billionaire who wasn't in his right mind, suddenly becoming the majority owner of a forty-billion-dollar empire? The court will freeze those shares within forty-eight hours."
  • Megan felt Casian’s body grow rigid beside her, his posture turning dangerously still like a predator preparing to strike. His hand on her lower back tightened, his fingers digging into her hip. He opened his mouth to deliver a cold, corporate threat, but Megan took a deliberate half-step forward, cutting right in front of him.
  • "Dr. Harrison," Megan spoke up, her voice clear, resonant, and completely devoid of fear.
  • Thomas blinked, taken aback by her sudden intervention. "What?"
  • "Arthur’s primary physician was Dr. Harrison," Megan said, leaning both palms flat against the smooth surface of the mahogany table, her body language radiating absolute confidence. She looked directly into Thomas's eyes. "And if you actually read his medical logs instead of paying his assistant for a fake affidavit, you would know that Arthur refused narcotic pain medication during his final month."
  • The room collectively held its breath.
  • "That's absurd!" Thomas spat, his face flushing a dark, angry red. "He had late-stage pancreatic cancer!"
  • "He did," Megan agreed smoothly, her hyperosmia picking up the sudden, metallic scent of cold sweat breaking out on Thomas's neck. "And he chose to remain fully lucid until his final breath. He drank warm ginger water and bitter willow bark tea—which I prepared for him every single morning at six a.m. His mind was sharper than yours is right now, Mr. Vance."
  • Megan stood up straight, crossing her arms over her chest as she scanned the rest of the board members, holding each of their glances one by one.
  • "Furthermore," Megan continued, her tone dropping to a dangerous, icy frequency, "if we are going to talk about financial irregularities, perhaps we should discuss the three off-shore accounts in the Cayman Islands registered under Vance Capital Holdings that received quarterly transfers from Morello Holdings' supply chain budget."
  • A loud gasp echoed across the table.
  • Thomas slammed his hands onto the table, standing up so fast his leather chair rolled back against the glass wall with a sharp crash. "You arrogant little bitch! You know nothing about corporate finance!"
  • In a fraction of a second, Casian moved.
  • He didn't yell. He didn't raise his voice. He simply closed the distance between himself and Thomas, grabbing the older man by his silk tie and yanking him forward until their faces were mere inches apart over the mahogany table. The sheer physical menace radiating off Casian made two board members instantly pull their chairs back in panic.
  • "Speak to my wife like that again, Thomas," Casian hissed, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper that chilled the entire room, "and I won't just fire you. I will personally ensure you spend the rest of your pathetic life in a federal prison."
  • Thomas’s lips trembled, his face turning pale as he looked into Casian’s pitch-black, murderous hazel eyes. He swallowed hard, unable to squeeze out a single word of defiance.
  • Casian shoved him back into his chair with contemptuous ease, straightening his cuffs with slow, terrifyingly calm precision.
  • "The board meeting is adjourned," Casian announced, his baritone voice echoing through the silent room. "The SEC investigation will be handled by my personal legal team before the end of the day. And Thomas... hand in your resignation by five p.m., or I release the Cayman audit to the Wall Street Journal."
  • Without waiting for a response, Casian turned on his heel, his large, warm hand sliding down to wrap firmly around Megan’s wrist, pulling her out of the boardroom behind him.
  • The heavy glass doors snapped shut behind them, plunging the private executive hallway into quiet solitude.
  • Megan barely had time to catch her breath before Casian yanked her into the private executive restroom, locking the heavy oak door behind them with a sharp, echoing click.
  • Before she could speak, Casian slammed her back against the cool marble wall. His massive frame crushed against hers, trapping her completely between the wall and his solid body. His heavy thigh wedged sharply between hers, pinning her lower body, while his broad hands framed her head against the marble.
  • "Where did you get those off-shore account numbers?" Casian growled, his breathing heavy and ragged against her mouth, his hazel eyes burning with a wild, volatile mix of shock, anger, and unbridled lust.
  • Megan gasped, her chest heaving against his suit jacket, her pulse hammering wildly in her throat. The physical proximity was overwhelming, the scent of his intense, soaring adrenaline drugging her senses.
  • "I told you... I spent three years with your grandfather," Megan whispered, a sharp, victorious smile curving her swollen lips despite her rapid breathing. "Arthur kept a second ledger in his study. He knew Thomas was stealing from him, but he was waiting for the right moment to strike."
  • Casian stared down at her flushed face, his gaze dropping hungrily to her lips, his body trembling with the raw, primal energy surging between them.
  • "You are a terrifying woman, Megan Morello," Casian murmured darkly, his hand sliding down from the wall to grip her waist, pulling her hips flush against his rigid length.
  • Megan arched her back slightly, her hands coming up to grip his lapels, her eyes flashing with a cold, unbreakable defiance.
  • "And you, husband... just realized you hired the right partner."
