Chapter 2 Rules Of The Cage
- "Are you threatening to poison me?" Casian’s voice dropped to a lethal whisper, his hand tightening on the doorknob until his knuckles turned stark white.
- "Why don't you take the first bite tomorrow and find out?" Megan replied, her voice smooth, holding his furious hazel glare without flinching.
- For three agonizing seconds, the air in the narrow room stretched so thin it felt ready to snap. Casian didn’t slam the door. Instead, he let go of the handle and turned around slowly, his massive shadow instantly swallowing the dim light filtering into the space. The corporate mask he had briefly put back on shattered, replaced by the raw, untamed authority of a man who owned half of Manhattan.
- "You have a lot of nerve for a girl who lives off my grandfather’s charity," Casian said, his footsteps silent but heavy as he closed the distance between them again.
- Megan didn’t step back, even when her shoulder blades pressed against the cold drywall. "It wasn’t charity, Casian. It was a contract. I worked for every dollar. Unlike someone who thinks a family name makes him a king."
- Casian let out a short, harsh laugh, stopping mere inches from her face. The scent of his expensive, dark woody cologne hit her senses again, but this time, her hyper-sensitive nose caught the faint, metallic trace of raw adrenaline. He was wired, his body completely running on the volatile friction between them.
- "A king still holds the power to execution, Megan," he murmured, his eyes dropping to her lips before snapping back to her gaze. "You think seventy percent of Morello Holdings makes you untouchable? Tomorrow morning, the board will look at me for direction, not a girl who smells like kitchen spices."
- "Then let them look," Megan countered, her chest rising and falling against his expensive suit jacket. The physical proximity was suffocating, a dangerous current of heat radiating from his skin straight into hers. "But when they ask why the company shares are locked in a legal battle because you refused a dead man’s dying wish, tell me how your Wall Street friends react."
- Casian’s hand shot out, his fingers wrapping firmly around the nape of her neck. He didn't hurt her, but his grip was unyielding, tilting her head back to expose the delicate line of her throat.
- "You’re playing a very dangerous game," he desisted, his thumb stroking the soft skin right behind her ear, a deliberate, slow caress that made a treacherous shiver run down her spine. "You want to be Mrs. Morello so badly? Fine. But you will learn that a golden cage is still a cage."
- "I survived Brooklyn, Mr. Morello," Megan whispered, her hands coming up to rest against his solid chest, her fingers curling into the crisp fabric of his shirt. "A penthouse in Manhattan won't break me."
- "We'll see about that," Casian growled.
- He leaned down abruptly, his lips brushing past her ear to press a rough, demanding kiss against the column of her neck. Megan gasped, her thighs tightening instinctively as his hips shifted forward, pinning her lower body against the wall. The sudden, intense surge of heat between them was almost overwhelming, a primal reaction that defied the hatred in their words.
- "Tomorrow at nine," Casian whispered darkly against her skin, his teeth lightly grazing her jawline before he pulled away. "My lawyers will be at your apartment. If you miss a single signature, I’ll ensure you’re blacklisted from every restaurant from New York to Los Angeles."
- "I won't miss it," Megan said, her voice slightly breathless but carrying an icy edge. "Just make sure your lawyers bring a pen that doesn't run out of ink. I have a lot of clauses to read."
- Casian stared at her for one final, intense second, his eyes scanning her flushed cheeks and the defiant spark in her eyes. Without another word, he turned, pulled the door open, and stepped out into the bright, crowded corridor of the funeral parlor, leaving the door wide open.
- Megan let out the breath she had been holding, her legs feeling momentarily weak. She looked down at her hands, still trembling slightly from the sheer rush of adrenaline and the lingering warmth of his touch. She had just declared war on New York’s most ruthless billionaire, and there was no turning back.
- The next morning, the rain was relentless, streaking against the cracked window of Megan’s small, cramped apartment in Brooklyn. The smell of old wood and cheap coffee filled the kitchen, a stark contrast to the luxurious estate she had lived in for the past three years.
- At exactly nine o'clock, a sharp, rhythmic knock echoed through the quiet space.
- Megan opened the door to find two men in identical, immaculate grey suits holding leather briefcases. Behind them stood Casian, leaning against the frame of the hallway, a long black umbrella in his hand, his eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses despite the gloomy weather.
- "Mr. Morello," Megan said, holding the door open just enough. "I didn't expect the executioner to show up in person."
- Casian took off his sunglasses, his hazel eyes cold and clinical. "I don't trust my assets with subordinates, Megan. Move aside."
- He walked in without waiting for an invitation, his presence instantly making the small apartment feel microscopic. He glanced around the modest living room, his lip curling in subtle disdain.
- "Nice place," Casian sneered, tossing his gloves onto her small dining table. "No wonder you were so desperate to hook my grandfather. This place looks like a holding cell."
- "It’s a home, Casian. A concept you clearly don't understand," Megan replied, shutting the door and turning to the two lawyers who were already setting up piles of documents on the table.
- "Let’s get to the point, Nona Vance," the older lawyer said, sliding a thick stack of papers toward her. "This is the prenuptial agreement drafted under Mr. Morello’s explicit instructions. It states that you waive all rights to personal alimony, all rights to Mr. Morello’s personal real estate acquired before the marriage, and you agree to a strict confidentiality clause regarding the internal affairs of Morello Holdings."
- Megan sat down slowly, pulling the papers toward her. Her eyes scanned the text line by line. Thanks to her sharp intellect, she didn't need a law degree to spot the traps.
- "Section four, clause B," Megan spoke up, her voice calm as she looked up at Casian, who was leaning against her kitchen counter with his arms crossed. "It says here that if the marriage dissolves due to 'irreconcilable differences' within the first year, seventy percent of the grandfather’s shares automatically revert to you."
- Casian smirked, a cruel, satisfied glint in his eyes. "A standard protection clause against opportunists."
- "Nice try, Casian," Megan said, suddenly picking up a pen and crossing out the entire clause with a heavy, black ink line.
- The lawyers gasped, looking at Casian in panic.
- "What do you think you're doing?" Casian hissed, stepping forward, his frame casting a long shadow over the table.
- Megan stood up, leaning over the table until she was just inches away from him, the ink still wet on the paper.
- "I am adjusting the terms," Megan said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, steady register. "We stay married for two years, as Arthur wanted in his original notes. No loopholes, no early divorces to steal my shares back. If you want your company to remain stable, you will endure me for seven hundred and thirty days."
- Casian’s jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing as he glared at the defaced document. "You think you can dictate terms to me?"
- "I just did," Megan replied, sliding the pen across the table until it clicked against his expensive watch. "Sign the amendment, husband, or tell the board why you lost the empire over a single clause."
