• "Haz—" I started to call her name, but she looked away, increased her pace, and got into her car; then she turned on the ignition, pulled out of the parking lot, and drove past me, her gaze fixed on the road. She didn't so much as glance in my direction no matter how hard I willed it.
• Roaring sounds filled my ears as I watched her car disappear out of sight, a wave of dread filling up my chest and making it difficult to breathe.
