Chapter 8 Face the Consequences

  • Jeremy's gaze deepened instantly, his handsome face darkening like ink, casting a gloomy shadow over the sunny sky outside.
  • But instead of getting angry, he raised his lips slightly. "You doubt me? Want me to prove it to you?" his tone was ambiguous.
  • Sierra understood what he meant.
  • She took a couple of steps back defensively. "You better focus on recovery. We can discuss divorce after you're out of here. I need to get back to work."
  • "Sierra!" Jeremy called after her. Does this ugly woman not take me seriously?
  • "We'll divorce once I'm out of here," Jeremy's tone was firm.
  • "Okay, but we can't announce it for two months." She stood her ground.
  • Jeremy watched her walk away, appearing small and fragile, yet radiating an unshakable determination that he couldn't ignore.
  • After a while, a mischievous smile crept onto the man's lips.
  • "Sierra, you turned down my request, then you'll have to face the consequences!"
  • At the end of her shift, the head nurse suddenly looked flustered and called her into the office.
  • "Sierra, did you offend the patient in Room 8?"
  • Room 8? Jeremy?
  • Sierra's heart sank, but she maintained a calm expression. "No, I didn't. I treat all patients equally."
  • The head nurse breathed a sigh of relief, then smiled. "That's good to hear. He specifically requested you for round-the-clock care during his stay. You'll have your hands full looking after him for these few days."
  • The patient in Room 8's emotions were unreadable. He had requested Sierra out of the blue, which led the head nurse's inquiry.
  • Sierra was at a loss for words.
  • "Twenty-four-hour care? Does he think he's disabled?" she muttered in frustration.
  • The head nurse shot her a look. "Once is enough for those kinds of remarks. No one messes with that patient. Even the hospital director treats him with respect. Just now, the director told me that if you take good care of him, your probation period can end early, and you'll be hired permanently! Sierra, we know about your mom's situation. The medical bills every month aren't small. Once you're hired permanently, your salary will increase by more than half. It'll ease your financial burden, right?"
  • Sierra's eyes widened in surprise.
  • While many interns were nervous about their evaluations for permanent positions, the hospital made an exception because of Jeremy.
  • The reality was harsh. It was no surprise that the name Jeremy carried such privilege wherever he went.
  • "Don't worry. I'll make sure to take good care of him," Sierra assured her.
  • "Huh?"
  • Sierra smiled innocently. "I mean, I'll look after the patient well, with no mistakes or oversights."
  • Sierra knocked on the door of Room 8 and then pushed it open.
  • Jeremy was indeed a diligent gentleman. He never slacked off on his work, with stacks of files piled up on the coffee table. He sat on the sofa by the window, legs crossed, pen in hand, signing documents.
  • The moonlight outside cascaded over his shoulders like liquid silver, casting off his aloofness and revealing a hint of warmth. Despite donning the oversized, shapeless patient clothes, his noble aura remained unchanged.
  • Sierra hesitated for a moment before entering. Without even glancing up, his voice turned cold as soon as he spoke, "Did I let you in?"
  • She halted in her tracks.
  • With no other option, she stepped back, tapping on the door once more and asked, "Mr. Hoffman, can I come in now?"
  • Jeremy lifted his gaze, looking at her figure.
  • She looked thin as if a gust of wind could blow her away. Holding a small tray with only water and medicine, her slender hands seemed burdened beyond their capacity.
  • Unconsciously furrowing his brow, his voice turned deep, "Come here."
  • Sierra obediently approached, stopping a meter away from him. "It's time for your medication."
  • Jeremy stared at her with interest. "You're a young lady from the Gusman family. Why are you working as a nurse?"
  • He had already checked this woman's background. After graduating, she ended up working here, taking a path quite different from her sister, who attended the prestigious arts academy.
  • Sierra sensed the disdain in his tone.
  • She looked him straight in the eye, her gaze as clear as water. "Is it strange for a young lady from the Gusman family to work as a nurse? I'm happy and content with my job here. You don't need to worry about me."
  • Jeremy's expression darkened a little more.
  • "I naturally won't worry about you, but I am quite curious about your sister's situation," he said.
  • Sierra was taken aback.
  • He started by asking about me, then switched to asking about Megan. Is he getting suspicious?
  • Jeremy keenly picked up on the subtle change in her eyes.
  • "What? Do you have something to hide?"
  • He had heard rumours about the strained relationship between the Gusman sisters, and it seemed they were true.
  • Sierra responded, "Why are you suddenly asking about my sister? What does her business have to do with you?"
  • Jeremy thought of Megan, and the usual coldness in his eyes disappeared.
  • He looked down, his lips curving into a faint smile. "Of course it does. She's the one I plan to marry."
  • Bang!
  • Sierra's tray slipped from her hands, hitting the ground with a thud. The water splashed onto her shoes, soaking them. Though warm, it sent a shiver down her spine.
