Chapter 216 Found the Leverage to Take Down Sierra
- Carla stood there for a long time, not realizing a pair of eyes from afar was watching her. Without even noticing, she had wandered here. She wanted to see Jeremy Hoffman, but she was scared to face him. She wanted to lay it all out, to make him choose between her and that woman. But she was terrified he no longer loved her and would go on and marry that woman anyway. Carla hovered on the knife-edge between love and pain; it hurt worse than the sickness that once ate her alive. She also wanted to see that woman—what did she look like? What kind of face made him forget her and marry someone else? But the courtyard was deep and quiet, and in the end Carla didn’t have the guts to take even half a step inside. She turned and walked away, silent. A Maserati rolled toward her. Inside, Megan Gusman took in Carla’s lonely, frosty face, and the thought she’d had at the airport that day hardened. This woman had to be connected to Jeremy Hoffman. Megan pulled over, rolled down the window, and called out, “Miss, what a coincidence.” Carla dragged herself out of her grief. She looked across the street at Megan’s bright, starry smile and recognized her as the celebrity who’d kindly tried to help her at the airport. She forced a small smile and tipped her chin to Megan. “I saw you standing outside the Hoffmans’ place. Are you here to see someone? I’m dropping off a wedding gift for my sister. Why don’t we go in together?” Carla’s expression finally flickered. “Your sister?” Megan smiled. “Yeah. My sister’s name is Sierra Gusman. She’s about to marry the Hoffmans’ Third Master, Jeremy Hoffman.” The light in Carla’s eyes dimmed under a sudden cloud. So… that woman’s name was Sierra. Carla stepped back and shook her head. “No. I was just passing by. I don’t know anyone from the Hoffmans. Thanks, but I’ll be going.” She hurried to a cab, climbed in, and fled like she couldn’t get away fast enough. Megan thought about going after her, but noticed something slip from the woman’s body and fall to the ground. She got out, walked over, and picked up a small pendant with a delicate design, turning it over in her hands. In the lower right corner on the back, a string of letters was engraved. “y love m” Megan mulled it over a few times, and sudden clarity lit her eyes. Jeremy Hoffman loves Carla? Was that woman just now the very Carla, the one rumored to have died from a terminal illness? But Carla hadn’t died. She’d come back—and she still couldn’t forget Jeremy! The idea thrilled Megan. If she really was Carla, and she’d returned to Jeremy’s side, then where did that leave Sierra? Back then, Jeremy risked everything for Carla’s illness. Their love story rocked all of Baycrest, and the nickname “the faithful obsessive” stuck to Jeremy because of it. If Jeremy broke off the engagement for Carla, didn’t that mean Sierra would have no reason, no face, to stay in Baycrest? Talk about a win falling right into her lap. Looked like even the heavens were helping her take down Sierra. A sly smile flickered in Megan’s eyes. With Carla as leverage, dealing with Sierra would get way easier. Inside the Hoffmans’ residence, Agatha Hoffman and Huang Yuerong were in the back garden, watering flowers and trimming grass with the two little ones. Aunt Hua came out through the back door to report, “Madam, Miss Megan Gusman is here. She says she wants to deliver a wedding gift to Third Master and Third Madam.” Agatha hesitated, remembering that Mr. Hoffman wasn’t staying here right now, then said, “Let her in.” Aunt Hua nodded and left. Huang Yuerong watched Aunt Hua’s back, thoughtful. “Yuerong, Meg is your stepdaughter, isn’t she? You two haven’t seen each other in a long time, have you?” Agatha asked.
