Chapter 1 The Kidney Transplant Scam
- Madison's POV
- "Let's start administering the medication."
- "Is this truly safe? After all, she's the Luna of the Dark Shadow pack ... "
- "Enough with the questions. Ms. Hammond will handle the rest. We'll pin the blame on the intern and call it a medical accident."
- I lay on the cold operating table, utterly powerless under the influence of the anaesthesia. The doctors, dressed in their sterile white coats, spoke with an unsettling detachment, sealing my fate with clinical precision.
- I managed a bitter smile. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to end up here.
- Just an hour earlier, I had received the call that sealed my doom.
- Ring.
- The phone rang with 'Honey' flashing on the screen.
- I answered, and his familiar voice came through the line.
- "Penelope needs a kidney transplant. The results show that your kidney is a perfect match. Please come to the hospital immediately."
- The tone on the other end was unyielding and factual. I listened to the magnetic voice in stunned silence as a heavy ache settled in my chest.
- In his three years of marriage, Chad Pierce had always been distant. And now, his only communication with me was to demand that I come to the hospital and donate a kidney to Penelope Hammond!
- "Chad, are you really going to risk your mate just for someone from another pack?" I pleaded, my voice breaking with desperation.
- Chad's voice was tinged with irritation. "Penelope may not be from our pack, but I've always considered her like a sister. I can't just stand by and watch her die. It's just a kidney; you'll be fine without it.
- "You're my mate. With healing abilities equivalent to an Alpha's, you'll recover quickly.
- "Once this is over, I'll make it up to you. But if you refuse, I'm not going to play nice."
- And with that, he ended the call without a hint of compassion.
- Sitting on the sofa, tears brimmed in my eyes. What were his final words supposed to mean?
- It wasn't until the front door of the villa was flung open and a group of black-suited werewolf guards stormed in that I realised the gravity of Chad's words.
- "Luna, please come with us," the lead werewolf guard instructed.
- How absurd! My mate, the Alpha of the Dark Shadow pack, had sent his werewolf guards to drag me away.
- I was hauled to the hospital like a ragdoll and shoved onto the operating table. Little did I know, this was all a trap set up by Penelope to get rid of me.
- She didn't just want my kidney; she clearly aimed for my life!
- The masked doctor expertly drew the pale green liquid from the syringe, expelled the air, and then began to slowly inject it into my veins.
- As the needle pierced my skin, a wave of despair washed over me. My wolf, Yura, began to wail uncontrollably, but soon I lost all connection with it. I had let it go.
- I refused to accept this fate. If I died like this, what would become of my father and brother? They'd be devastated. And did Chad know that Penelope intended to kill me? Did he want me dead as well?
- Being killed on the operating table—was there a more degrading fate for a Luna?
- As the final dose of medication was administered, a surge of unbearable pain overwhelmed me. My bloodshot, glassy eyes remained fixed on the ceiling, unable to focus.
- "Why hasn't she flatlined yet? Could it be that the dosage was too low?"
- "That's unlikely. Ms. Hammond assured us that even an Alpha couldn't survive this injection!"
- Despite my fading awareness, I caught fragments of the doctors' conversation. One crucial realisation struck me.
- Penelope! It was Penelope who had engineered this nightmare!
- A wave of fury consumed me. If only I had the chance to begin again, I would track down that wretched woman and make her pay!
- My insides felt as though they were being crushed by an iron vice, the agony leaving me gasping for air. I gradually closed my eyes, surrendering to the encroaching darkness ...
