Chapter 2 Rebirth?

  • Madison's POV
  • "Madison, Madison, are you okay?"
  • Who was calling my name? Everything around me was shrouded in darkness, and I felt as though I was drifting in mid-air.
  • Hadn't I just died?
  • "It's me, Yura!"
  • "Yura, you're still alive? I thought I had lost you," I responded, feeling a mix of shock and relief.
  • "I know it sounds crazy, but we're both still here! The Moon Goddess intervened on our behalf!" Yura's voice was filled with excitement.
  • "The goddess mentioned that your strong will to live and deep resentment brought her to act. She's granting you a chance at a new life, but there's one important condition."
  • I lifted my head, hope brightening my eyes as I awaited Yura's next words.
  • "You must keep your rebirth a secret from everyone."
  • "I understand." Right after I spoke, a brilliant light cut through the darkness. When I opened my eyes, I found myself on the sofa in my own home.
  • My mind was still hazy, and the fatigue reminded me of my recent brush with death. I sat up quickly and pressed my hand against my chest, struggling to catch my breath.
  • The pounding of my heart was a reassuring sign of my return to life.
  • "Yura, are you still there?" I reached out mentally to my wolf.
  • "Congratulations on your rebirth, darling." Yura's voice echoed softly in my mind. "From now on, it's all in your hands. I hope you value this second chance. Call on me if you need anything."
  • As Yura's voice faded away, I remained alone on the sofa, stunned.
  • Everything felt surreal, like a dream, but I trusted Yura's words.
  • I checked my phone, and the time indicated that I had been reborn to two hours prior to my death.
  • Before I could fully savour the joy, a 'ding' announced a new text message.
  • You've been Luna for three years, but it's all just for show. He was still here last night. You're just an annoying third wheel. It's time for you to leave!'
  • The message included a photo of Chad, soundly asleep. His features were as striking as ever, and despite his tired look, he was undeniably attractive.
  • Nestled against him was Penelope, her hospital gown slipping to reveal her smooth skin. The smirk on her lips suggested she was very much aware of her surroundings.
  • To anyone who saw this photo, they would seem like a devoted couple.
  • But this scene was like a dagger to my heart.
  • Three years ago, to marry Chad, I ignored my family's and friends' objections, abandoning everything to join the Dark Shadow pack.
  • I had devoted myself to Chad, diligently performing my duties as Luna.
  • However, Chad's mother and sister had always looked down on me, questioning my intentions and suspecting I was after the wealth of the Dark Shadow pack. Their subtle and overt hostility had made my life a constant struggle.
  • Despite being a Luna, I had to act like a humble servant—always obedient and subservient, handling laundry and cleaning without complaint. I never mentioned any of this to Chad, fearing it might upset him or make him feel like he was put on the spot.
  • For Chad, I was prepared to endure anything.
  • But what did I receive in return?
  • Chad's icy indifference, Penelope's taunts, and the haunting memory of being pushed onto that operating table in my previous life.
  • I was consumed by embarrassment, bitterness, and a deep loneliness that left my head pounding with agonising pain.
  • Three years of marriage felt like a cruel joke. What was the point of continuing?
  • The insistent ringing of the phone jolted me from my thoughts. Looking down, I saw it was Chad calling.
  • The sight of his name on the screen felt surreal, as though it belonged to a different era. If I wasn't mistaken, this call was probably about asking me to go to the hospital to donate my kidney.
  • I didn't pick up until the phone rang again.
  • "Madison, why have you taken so long to answer?" Chad's voice was already tinged with irritation, quickly followed by, "Never mind. You need to come to the hospital right away. Penelope needs a kidney transplant. The results show that your kidney is a perfect match—"
  • "Chad," I cut him off, "Let's end our bond."
  • My voice, heavy with emotion, resonated clearly in the quiet room.
  • Yesterday, I waited for Chad after work, standing in the rain for over an hour. The cold I caught kept me from going into the office this morning.
  • It seemed that the joy of my rebirth had temporarily overshadowed my physical discomfort.
