• The demon stood at the settlement’s center, right where the rubble pile had been. It had burned its way out, melting stone and earth. Now it was surrounded by fighters, all of them keeping distance, none brave enough to attack.
• “Why isn’t anyone fighting it?” Kaden asked, dismounting at a run.
• “Because it’s not attacking,” Gregor said. He was bleeding from a cut on his arm. “It just stands there. Watching. Like it’s waiting for something.”
