Chapter 5 The Lawsuit: Aftermath Of Actions

  • EPISODE FIVE.
  • TITLE: THE LAWSUIT; AFTERMATH OF ACTIONS.
  • SELAH'S POV.
  • I walk into my room angrily, crying, kicking and throwing everything at sight. This is so annoying, everything happening right now is so annoying.
  • Why's everyone freaking out because I had a one night stand?
  • "You don't get to walk out of your father like that, Selah!" Mom bitches at me, walking closely behind me into the room.
  • "What did you want me to do? Mom. Wrap my so-called filthy hands around him and try to pacify him even though, I'm the reason why he will go broke for the next six months?" I yell back at her furiously, not minding my tone, not minding my aggressiveness, although, they don't deserve any of it.
  • "You didn't even bother to talk it out with Joshua. He's hurt and mad, all he needs is your..."
  • "No, Mom! He doesn't get to eat his cake and have it. He talked to me rudely when he knew what went down and he didn't forgive me for that!"
  • "Because you ruined his damned life! Are you going to live your life now as a mistress?"
  • I retreated immediately, utterly shocked and surprised she used that word at me. A one night stand is going to make me a mistress? To who? She's so ridiculous right now that I might crash out.
  • What the hell is she talking about?
  • "Never, Mom. And if you're talking about that son of a bitch I slept with. I'm going to sue him for this."
  • "Oh, you might as well do that when you're living in the streets already. Don't you dare bring yourself to our presence until you sort your life out."
  • "And she will do that with me." Aunty Aubrey's voice pops behind Mom simultaneously. Her tall frame and cinnamon scent fills the room. She smiles knowingly at me, making me blubber.
  • I gasp audibly. How is she here?
  • "Aunty Aubrey!" I cry and run to her immediately like a little child.
  • "Oh my baby." She coos, sniffling my hair like she always does.
  • "What are you doing here, Aubrey?" Mom's harsh voice lances at her immediately.
  • "To find out if you haven't ripped her hair out of her head yet. Because I know how old-fashioned you are." Aunty Aubrey says to her sister-in-law, matching her tone.
  • Mom and Aunty Aubrey, Dad's younger sister have always been loggerheads at each other.
  • After Aunty Aubrey got married and struggled with childbirth which is the reason her marriage got severed, Mom hated her.
  • She thinks she's a bad influence because of the divorce, it's a sin, to her.
  • "What? You don't get to have a say in this. What are you doing here?" Mom asks the same question again.
  • Aunty Aubrey strains her neck above my shoulders and glances at the bag on the bed.
  • "Where were you planning to go before?"
  • I chuckle and disentangle from the hug. "I don't know. My mind is just so muffled."
  • "Crazy girl." She laughs and moves to help me pack the little clothes I have since Sarah's stuff occupied almost all the space in the room.
  • "We will have a talk about this later, Selah." Mom bites out and walks out of the room, her steps heavy.
  • "Aunty Aubrey." I sobs again, hugging her from behind.
  • She's the last person I expected to be here, I didn't even think of running to her for help since it happened, I'm so dumb.
  • "Hey. It's fine. Let's get out of here first."
  • *
  • I watch the busy street move faster as we drive into the countryside where she resides, my head muddled with thoughts.
  • My life is just so funny, this morning, I was worried about facing the committee with the fear of ending up on the street but it ended up with Dad getting punished for my sins and Aunty Aubrey saving my ass.
  • "I'm sorry, Selah." Aunt Aubrey says the first time since she started driving which was an hour ago.
  • "I didn't do it, I swear. It wasn't my fault."
  • She stares at me with a small smile lingering at the corner of her lips.
  • "You know one thing about me? I don't judge. I've lived all my life with people judging me so I won't do that to you. I just hate that they aren't listening to you."
  • I turn to her fully and smile through my tears. God,I love Aunty Aubrey so much. She just gets me. In fact, she gets everyone.
  • "What should I do? I'm confused."
  • She shrugs." We are going to do what you talked about earlier. Maybe it will ease you a little bit."
  • "Lawsuit?" I provide, in a disbelieving tone, wide-eyed.
  • As much as I want to know the truth about what happened to me, the idea of suing someone scares the hell outta me. I was just bluffing earlier so Mom could take me seriously.
  • "Yes. But I will be blunt with you. I don't think it will do you any good. Lawsuits about rape always ends with settlement or you might be accused of perjury."
  • "Perjury?!" I recoil surprisingly and she only chuckles, her hands whirring on the wheel.
  • "Yes. Especially when you're dealing with someone like him. Roman is such a nut job."
  • Roman? What? She knows the guy? The one I slept with, who scrambled off like a coward?
  • "You know him?"
  • "Yes. I work as his litigator. And he's a terrific guy. He believes in having fun, the extreme ones. He's crazy but big on family. So,if you're going to come at him, you should know that you're coming at the whole Eaton family."
  • "That sounds like a piece of work."
  • "Are you ready to face this? I have a lawyer I can hook you up with."
  • I shut my mouth a bit. I just realized that the guy I slept with isn't a tender meat to bite on and my Aunt works for him is crazy enough. She won't be representing me too.
  • "Selah." She calls, wrapping her free hand with the one closer to her.
  • "I know this is a lot to take in. But in my own opinion, you should give it a shot." She advise.
  • I nods. "Fine. I will do it."
  • And two hours later, We are in front of a crazily and unnecessarily big building with Aunty Aubrey's friend, Mira who's a sexual assault attorney.
  • She hands over the document to me and marches towards the building.
  • "You act like you're about to devour them. Don't give them a reason to doubt the reason why you're doing this." She warns gently.
  • I barely give a gesture to what she said and only follow her like an obedient dog.
  • God, I'm so smitten. If he owns a company as big as this, How the hell am I supposed to win him?
  • The receptionist cubicle was the first area we stumble upon, the redhead lady with a welcoming smile walk out of her space to welcome us.
  • "Hi, who are you here for?"
  • "Roman Eaton. We have something to talk about." Maria says, handing over the other copy of the file to her.
  • She stares down at it with a doubtful expression on her freckled face. Her expressive eyes bulge the moment she skim over the content.
  • "What?" She glowers in surprise.
  • "Get your boss for me." Mira says, giving her a cold glare and I almost feel bad for her.
  • "Oh,fuck. He's here." She curses in a raspy voice, looking above our shoulders.
  • As if we're in synchrony, we all turn our heads over the direction where she's looking.
  • My mouth drops to my jaw as he walks in with a couple of men, dressed in tuxedos.
  • Their men cologne wafts through the air in a hypnotizing manner, dazzling every fibre of my muscle.
  • Holy lord God of heaven. He looks so hot and manly.
  • He's nothing like the casually dressed guy with clumsy long hair I slept with.
  • "Oh,you!" He shouts, his lips curls up in amusement.
  • What the hell? Is he elated to see me or is he being a freak?
  • "They served you with a freaking lawsuit. Are you crazy?" The redhead screams, slamming the paper on his chest.
  • Why's she addressing him casually? Is this actually a thriving company? Everywhere is dead silent.
  • Roman watches me with an expression which no longer bears amusement.
  • "Wait, you're suing me? On what grounds?" He scoffs in surprise, his tone a bit icy and edgy.
  • I press my lips in an emboldened manner. "What did you expect? You thought I was here to appreciate you ruining my wedding?" I scoffs.
  • "God. You're so out of your mind." He grumbles under his tone.
  • "Say that when I drag your ass in jail myself."
  • I spat walking out in anger, determined to do everything I can to make sure Roman pay for what he did to me.
  • The thought of him living fine after everything riles me up, and that's enough motivation for me to go on with this lawsuit.
  • It's too late to back off now.
