• The ringing of his phone jolted Kris awake. Groaning, he shifted slightly and picked it up from the nightstand. He froze when he saw the caller ID—it was his mother.
• Kris stared at the phone for several seconds before tossing it onto the bed beside him, unanswered. It rang again, but he simply watched until it stopped.
