Chapter 9 Saviour

  • “I must go find out what is going on over there.” Drake added with urgency in his tone.
  • “Do you forget about our mission to find the cave so quickly?” Lena interjected immediately.
  • “There might be injured people in the burning house incident. I need to go save them and more so, Kiera shouldn't be seen just yet. Knowing fully well that she escaped from the hospital the sheriff's might be on her neck.” Drake eyes knitted.
  • He knows the danger if Kiera could go to the fire scene.
  • Lena frowned, hissing loudly in annoyance.
  • “Let the people save themselves or what is our business with that? We need to attend to a more serious issue here” she shouted.
  • “Let him go Lena, the people need him.” Kiera added weakly. Healing gradually, not fully possessed by the Alien, she's hiding it.
  • “Then we must follow him, we can't go to the woods. Alone?” Lena replied eyes wide not just with fear, but something deeper. Something tender. Drake could see the affection in her already.
  • Drake softly, watching her,Is this what love looks like?
  • “Hey Lena… don’t panic okay...” He placed a hand gently on her back, grounding her.
  • “Listen to Kiera, alright? She knows better.”
  • He turned to Kiera, voice firmer now.
  • “I have to go. If anyone’s still in that fire, they need help and fast. You get Kiera out of here. Take her home. Whatever happens, I don’t want either of you going near those woods. Not now.”
  • He headed towards the street, to the fire scene.
  • “Alright Drake, be careful and come back on time.” Lena shouted at his back tears clinging to her lashes.
  • She turns back holding Kiera and assisting her to move faster as they head to Lena's apartment.

  • Meanwhile, civilians are already panicking and arriving at the priest's burning house.
  • The priest laid in his room door locked, after regaining consciousness a few minutes back he crawled to the room as the fire became more wild with serious heat scorching his aged skin.
  • Mayor Vic, left the scene earlier. On his way he met the sheriff's.
  • “Mayor Vic Sir..” The Sheriff saluted in respect.
  • “Easy” Vic nodded as he spoke.
  • “We don't know the man called ‘Drake Marson’ yet or his whereabouts sir..” the sheriff reported sternly.
  • “He will come to us himself” Vic grinned wickedly, his gaze fixed somewhere else.
  • “When you see him, hold… don't act funny okay… he might be tricky and dangerous” he added after a long pause.
  • “Shouldn't we arrest him sir?, you mentioned he killed…um..” The sheriff asked, confused.
  • “Don't!!... Not just yet” he growled plainly, like it was already decided.
  • The Sheriff's looked at themselves in confusion.. “What is wrong with this man?” They discussed in hushed voices.
  • “I will signal to you immediately he is vulnerable, arrest him immediately you get my word.” Mayor Vic smirked, arms crossed in victory.
  • “Copy that sir…. Copy sir…” All Saluted.
  • “Good boys,” he added, clearly enjoying himself and left.

  • Confused civilians panicking at the fire scene. “What is the cause of the fire?” whispered at the same time amongst themselves. As Drake advanced towards them, the fire became more wild. Then a sudden cry from inside.
  • With every breath he had the priest shouted.
  • “Help…helpee, anybody out there?” he struggled to move as hot heat scorched his skin. Smoke filled the room up, he banged real hard at the door.
  • A civilian caught the cry, “Somebody is in there” pointing at the fire hand shaking.
  • Drake swerved, he shouted. “Everyone should get a bucket and water from that well now!!” pointing to a well very close to the priest's house.
  • “Get water and kill the fire real quick” he exhaled slowly, weighed by fear.
  • He took off his sleeve, got a bucket of water filled and began to throw water into the fire. It grew more wild as he threw more and more water.
  • “Alright everyone line up in a straight line and pass me water and sand” he shouted moving very close to the burning house. Everyone obeyed, as some civilians assisted him killing the raging fire.
  • The priest cried more and more from inside.
  • Immediately Drake soaked his cloth into water and moved into the fire.
  • “What is he doing?” Somebody shouted.
  • “Is he really going into the fire?” another added from the back.
  • “What a brave boy,” an aged woman exclaimed.
  • “You're gonna die in there.” a lady shouted from behind.
  • Inside the house Drake tied his wet sleeves around his nose. “Hey man, where are you?” Hey…hey!!” No response.
  • The priest tried to reply but the smoke had suffocated him inside the room, he was helpless. The pain from the fight with Vic made things worse for him.
  • Drake continued to panic as he burst open each door, the fire has caught the roof sending down a thud of heavy wood with fire enough to burn a car into ashes. In front of him blocking his way from going further.
  • The heat caught his pale skin as he raced back outside.
  • The sirens wailed too late.
  • Smoke still curled like black fingers into the sky when Mayor Vic zoomed in with the fire van, lights flashing like warning fangs. “Y'all should move away!!” he honked at the civilians.
  • He stepped down slowly, too calm for a man watching half a street burn. His boots crunched over charred gravel, his suit untouched by ash, as if he had not just left them all to choke.
  • Drake was just staring at him like a dumb man, his teeth clenched together with anger and annoyance as if to tear Vic apart.
  • His shirt clung to his sweat-drenched back, but he watched Vic… watched him smile thinly like it was just another show to clean up.
  • Mayor Vic didn’t speak right away.
  • He just stood there… watching the flames die.
  • “The fuck you're just coming by this time?? to do what? Huh.. to turn off the fire? When the only survivor has already been burnt to aches?.” Drake fired off at Mayor Vic, tone as sharp as broken glass.
