Chapter 328 Wan Meng on the Roof

  • “What? You don’t want to go?” Hendrik looked over at him. His hands didn’t stop. He typed fast, firing back replies in the group chat. “Are you sure you want to handle something this small yourself?” “Small?” Hendrik chuckled at that. He spun his laptop around, a wall of numbers facing him. “Look carefully. These are the big players co-investing this time. If we lock down the Top 10, Xenakis Group’s stock will jump at least three points.” With Xenakis Group’s current market cap, one point alone would have the shareholders cheering for days without sleep. Three points… “I’d better clear out the emergency room first so we don’t drop the ball.” Zachary finally got what the boss wanted tonight. People have always been greedy. If there’s good stuff, someone will try to grab it. But the pit of desire never fills. One misstep and you become someone else’s meal. Since the boss was stepping in, they’d better pray luck was on their side. As they spoke, the phone on the desk rang. “Talk.” Hendrik hit speaker. “Hendrik, something happened!” The X on the other end sounded way more rattled than usual. “What is it?” “An employee climbed up to the company’s rooftop. She’s ready to jump!” Ready to jump?! Both men in the study went ice-cold. “Do we know why?” “I heard it’s about a file.” X had just reached the scene, already called in rescue and security. He didn’t have the full picture yet. “Got it. Stall her however you can. I’m heading over now.” Hendrik decided fast. An employee suicide would be a stain on Xenakis Group. No matter how busy he was, as the person in charge, he had to go. “Hendrik, this feels off.” Zachary suddenly remembered the employee he’d looked into that afternoon—Wan Meng. She’d been punished for stealing files from the project department. So… He quickly laid out what happened. “You should’ve stepped in sooner.” Hendrik’s brows pulled tight, irritation simmering under his calm. “I was thinking—” The study door swung open from the outside. Master and aide almost got slammed. “Jovienne?!” Seeing her at the door surprised Zachary. Her hair still dripped. Foam clung to her cheeks, not fully rinsed away. Her eyes couldn’t hide their panic. She looked a little disheveled. “There’s trouble at the company. I want to go.” She was shaking as she said it. Hendrik’s heart pinched. He didn’t argue. He scooped her up in a princess carry, pulling her into his chest. “I’m going to the company!” Jovienne met his eyes, hoping for permission. But it was a dark, windy night, and she was pregnant. Hendrik wasn’t going to sign off on something that reckless. “Stay home. I’ll handle it.” She wasn’t in the mood to listen. She struggled, voice hitching with a sob. “It’s Wan Meng! I refused to keep her on. She’s acting rashly because of me. She’s not thinking straight.” She had to reveal everything now. Hendrik looked like he already knew. He didn’t even blink. Instead, he carried her back to the bedroom, grabbed the towel by the headboard, and gently wiped her hair and face. “Hendrik, we can’t drag this out. What if—” She clutched his hand, eyes blazing. She was frantic. How could he act like nothing was wrong? “X is already on-site. Zachary and I will go check it out. You stay home.” “No! I’m going. It’s my fault. She—” “Anyone who betrays Xenakis Group doesn’t deserve pity. I just want to verify a few things while I’m there.” Hendrik’s handsome face was set, a chill of displeasure between his brows. Jovienne couldn’t tell if he was mad she’d kept quiet or furious at Wan Meng’s irresponsible stunt. For a second, she had no answer. “Stay put. I’ll update you right away.” She already knew he wouldn’t let her go with him. But this was life and death. If Wan Meng really took that leap… Wouldn’t they be killing someone by doing nothing?
