Chapter 304 Do You Have a Girlfriend

  • Ren Yanshu was a smart man. Of course he understood. Besides, Mayor Zou only asked his daughter to intern at the Xenakis Group. He didn’t entrust her personal safety to them. If something really happened, Hendrik, as the CEO, was swamped with work; it’d be understandable if he couldn’t keep an eye on everything. But Ren was hired for this. He couldn’t shrug it off. He could very well end up shattered and disgraced. Still, that was nothing compared to the bitterness of having the woman he loved stolen from him. Ren Yanshu was seething with anger, yet his face stayed perfectly innocent and harmless. “I don’t get what you’re saying. But whatever you took from me, I’ll take back one day.” “Yeah? I’ll be waiting,” Hendrik said. He didn’t take Ren seriously at all. A cold laugh slipped out as he lifted his chin and brushed past him. Knocked aside, Ren stood there, his gaze turning ice-cold in a snap. He gnashed his teeth, fists clenched tight, and hissed through them, “Hendrik, don’t get cocky!” … When Zou Yixin woke up, her head was still a little dizzy. Instinctively, she touched her clothes. Once she confirmed everything was intact, she finally let out a breath. “Miss Zou, you’re awake,” the nurse at the bedside asked gently. “Where’s the officer who saved me?” “Oh, he’s still waiting outside.” The nurse pressed the call button to notify the doctor for a further check-up. But Zou Yixin stopped her. “Can you call him in? I want to see him.” In her darkest moment, he’d been a beam of light that lit up her life. She wanted to repay him. The nurse didn’t dare delay and quickly opened the door to call him in. The moment Ren Yanshu saw Zou Yixin, his brows tightened. On the way carrying her back, he’d only registered that she was stunning and wore a rare, soft fragrance. Faint, but fresh. Not quite the mayor’s-daughter vibe he’d expected. But he’d been rushing her to the hospital and hadn’t looked too closely. Now, with color back in her cheeks, those luminous eyes locked onto him, and his heart skipped two beats. What was that? He’d never felt this before. Worried someone might notice, he cleared his throat fast, as if nothing had happened. “Miss Zou, are you feeling okay?” “What’s your name? Which unit are you with?” She acted like she hadn’t heard his concern, firing questions right back. “I’m Ren Yanshu. I just took a post with the Sparaville special forces.” “Ren Yanshu…” She repeated his name, the corners of her lips lifting. “Okay. I’ll remember it.” “You—” “Are you married?” That question froze them both. The nurse pressed back a laugh, seeing right through her. She nudged Ren. “Miss Zou is asking you.” “I mean, do you have a girlfriend or anything?” Realizing she’d rushed it, Zou Yixin dialed it down. “Miss Zou, that’s my personal life. I don’t have to answer.” Clearly, he didn’t like the question. And really didn’t want to answer it. “Mm… okay.” Without an answer, her lashes dropped at once. Ren didn’t say more. He turned to the nurse. “She just woke up. Better have the doctor take a good look.” “Already called,” the nurse said with a nod. “I feel totally fine. I can leave.” Zou Yixin brushed it off and swung her legs to get out of bed. “Hey! Miss Zou! Please don’t move until the doctor arrives!” The nurse was startled. Her status was what it was. If anything happened, Mayor Zou would come down on them hard, and none of them could bear it. “Careful!” Ren reacted fast. In two words’ worth of time, he blocked her at the bedside. But as he reached out, their hands fell together, perfectly natural. Their bodies ended up close, too—close enough that a slight lift of the chin could catch each other’s breath. Their eyes met, and something unreadable flickered in Ren’s gaze. Zou Yixin was at a loss, her cheeks flushing in an instant. “I—I just wanted to stretch my legs…” She pulled her hand back in a hurry, tripping over her words. “Wait till the doctor finishes. I’ll take you home,” Ren said, his brows drawn tighter. He straightened up, a rare light flaring in his eyes. And that answer made her heart bloom in disbelief. She settled back obediently, head lowered, waiting for the doctor, shy as a girl with a crush.
