The driver turned to look at me through the rearview mirror, his bored expression barely concealed behind tired eyes. I handed him the fare, murmured a quiet “Thanks,” and stepped out into the cool early morning.
- The car pulled away, leaving me standing alone on the quiet street. The sky was a murky shade of gray, a prelude to sunrise, and the air carried the lingering chill of the night. I exhaled, my breath forming a ghostly mist in the cold.
