- I opened up my heart to Beatrice, at least about the feelings that had been consuming me since I realized the mistake I made in neglecting my marriage and allowing my wife to reach the point of asking for a divorce. But there were some things that Beatrice wouldn't want to know at all, and those were better kept secret, as nothing good would come from their revelation, and I fervently hoped that my wife wouldn't press me for answers to certain tricky questions. But it was clear from the look she gave me that her feelings were confused; she was puzzled, not understanding what was actually going on, besides the insecurity that was always present whenever we talked about us.
- "I understand your suspicion, my love," I thought it best to say. "I can't expect you to believe me, to change everything again, but I hope we can come to an understanding."
