• “He said what?” Charlie’s voice was loud and unmistakably shocked, drawing the attention of everyone nearby. Autumn offered a shy smile, her wide eyes pleading with Charlie to lower her voice.
• Realizing the commotion she’d caused, Charlie’s cheeks flushed red as she cleared her throat with a soft cough. Leaning closer to Autumn, she asked in a quieter tone, “Maverick’s joking, right?”
• Autumn shook her head, feeling a wave of shame wash over her. She hadn’t planned on telling Charlie about Derek being the father, but here they were, with Charlie ordering shot after shot. Autumn couldn't understand how Charlie wasn’t drunk yet—or perhaps she was, just oddly calm.
