Chapter 8

  • The opportunity came a month later. Joseph completely let down his guard against me, and as a reward, he allowed me to accompany him to a private art exhibition.
  • It was the first time I stepped out of the villa since being imprisoned.
  • I was wearing the white long dress he had picked out for me, with the platinum necklace that locked around my neck like an accessory, holding onto his arm.
  • As we passed by a painting, I pretended to be captivated by it, pausing my steps.
  • Just as a middle-aged man in a white coat and elegant demeanor walked past me, I stumbled and weakly leaned towards him.
  • "Be careful!"
  • The man instinctively caught me.
  • Joseph immediately walked over, pulled me back from the man, and gave him a cold glance.
  • "Sorry, I... I twisted my foot." I apologized pitifully, beads of sweat forming on my forehead, looking like I was in pain.
  • "I'm a doctor. If you don't mind, I can take a look." The middle-aged man politely offered.
  • Joseph scrutinized him for a few seconds, seemingly confirming that he posed no threat, before nodding.
  • The man crouched down and gently touched my ankle. Shielded by his large white robe, I lowered my voice and quickly whispered something that only the two of us could hear.
  • "All the information on the Chimera Project, a new phone that can contact the outside world, and Kian's contact information."
  • The man's fingers stiffened, and he looked up with a hint of shock and greed in his eyes.
  • He was Yasmin Foxley's private doctor, and I had seen his name and photo on a medical report before.
  • He was desperate for money and was treading a crooked path.
  • Quickly regaining his composure, he checked my ankle and quietly replied, "In the lounge of the art exhibition, locker number three, no lock."
  • After everything was done, he stood up and said to Joseph, "Mr. Foxley, this young lady just has a minor sprain. She only needs to rest."
  • That night, I pretended my foot was hurting and had Joseph carry me back to the room.
  • Out of his sight, I retrieved the brand new phone from the locker in the lounge.
  • In the dead of night, I turned it on, and the first thing I did was search for news about Kian.
  • The news was everywhere.
  • "Wolfe Corporation declares bankruptcy, CEO Kian missing with debts of one trillion."
  • "According to insiders, Kian, trapped in love, lost everything overnight."
  • In the picture, Kian had a scruffy beard, fierce eyes, like a wild dog driven to a dead end.
  • Joseph's methods were even more ruthless than I had imagined.
  • Perfect.
  • I dialed the number that was ingrained in my memory.
  • The phone rang for a long time before it was answered, and Kian's hoarse, alert voice came from the other end: "Who is it?"
  • "It's me, Lucy."
  • There was a long silence on the phone, followed by heavy breathing.
  • "I'm at Joseph's place." I didn't give him a chance to ask any questions, "I know you hate me, but now, we have a common enemy."
  • "What do you want to do?" His voice was full of uncertainty.
  • "I'll help you get revenge, and you'll give me back my freedom." I said each word carefully, "I can give you all of Joseph's schedule, security vulnerabilities, and evidence of his business crimes. Once it's done, we're even, and you'll disappear completely from my world."
  • There was another silence on the phone, and then Kian's suppressed, crazy laughter.
  • "Good, good... Lucy, my Lucy, you didn't disappoint me."
  • Two former enemies, in the face of a common enemy, formed an unstable alliance.
  • I sent Kian all the information I had about Joseph's sister, Yasmin Foxley, stored in my phone.
  • "This is his only weakness, and our only bargaining chip."
  • After sending this message, I deleted all records and hid my phone.
  • Outside the door, Joseph's footsteps could be heard approaching.
