Chapter 6 Chloe, How Are You?

  • Inside the emergency room. "Quick, 200 ounces, keep it going."
  • "Dr. Merton, this little girl's heartbeat is weak. I think she's got a heart condition. Congenital heart disease ought to be the cause," said another ER doctor while observing the heart rate monitor.
  • Dr. Merton also noticed it and felt a little helpless as he said, "Rescue her first, and nurse, notify her family immediately."
  • "Okay!" After exiting the emergency room, the nurse found Jett and frantically inquired, "Who are the girl's family? Who are the little girl's family? The child's situation is extremely precarious."
  • When he heard that, his heart felt like a rock had hit it, and he was slightly out of breath. He'd never felt like that before.
  • "Me! I'm a member of her family." Jett spoke up without hesitation.
  • "Are you the child's father?"
  • For a brief moment, Jett was at a loss for words, unsure how to respond.
  • The nurse stated again, "Let me tell you this—your daughter has a heart condition. Congenital heart disease is the preliminary diagnosis. She will require a thorough examination following her rescue to determine the precise cause."
  • "Okay, no worries. Not at all a problem. How is she now?" Jett was worried.
  • "Doctors are still attempting to save her." After saying that, the nurse returned to the emergency room.
  • The minutes and seconds ticked away. Mylah was already out of harm's way when she arrived at the ward half an hour later, though she was feeling somewhat frail. She was about to speak with Jett when she noticed someone walking in through the door, and suddenly, her face revealed a smile.
  • "Ms. Kimberley!" Mylah's voice sounded weak.
  • Jett turned around to see a familiar face in front of him.
  • "Jett! What brings you here?"
  • Kimberley arrived, and she appeared to be a little perplexed. She wondered if Jett had collided with Mylah.
  • To keep the children from the welfare home from going missing, they all wore smartwatches. Mylah had been gone for two hours, so she knew where she was, thanks to the location tracking feature on her smartwatch.
  • "It's nothing. I happened to be passing by."
  • "Uncle Superman is a good man and a hero, Ms. Kimberley. He rescued the old lady and me today." Despite her frailty, Mylah never forgot to speak up for Jett.
  • Kimberley responded with a smile, "Indeed, Mylah. Rest well. I'm going to have a quick conversation with your Uncle Superman, and then I'll be right back to accompany you."
  • "All right, Ms. Kimberley." Mylah simply smiled and closed her eyes.
  • The two then stepped outside.
  • Jett questioned Kimberley all about Mylah, and he became increasingly convinced that Mylah was related to his child, whose fate was unknown.
  • "Jett, don't tell me that you intend to adopt her as your daughter?!" Kimberley exclaimed as she stared at him in shock.
  • When Jett heard that he smiled slightly and said, "Adopted daughter? That's not such a bad idea!"
  • He told Kimberley to take good care of Mylah because he had to go to the White residence.
  • He left the hospital with Bernard after speaking.
  • Kimberley complied solemnly with Jett's order because she dared not make light of it.
  • She entered the ward and saw Mylah asleep, with a sweet smile on her innocent face, and sat down.
  • Mylah was dreaming at the time.
  • In her dream, she and her friends were on a vast prairie with a clear sky, fluffy white clouds, and a gentle breeze. Together, the kids ran and played. Everyone basked in the warmth of the sun and relished the comforting breeze.
  • When all the other children disappeared, lightning suddenly flashed around them, and the air was filled with fog. Mylah sat on the ground, terrified and sobbing loudly.
  • "Boohoo!" Mylah cried out, startling Kimberley, who was sitting next to her.
  • Mylah had stopped crying and kept shouting, "Uncle Superman, Uncle Superman!" just as Kimberley was about to approach her to comfort her.
  • Mylah saw a tall man dressed in an army combat uniform in her dream. That figure, like Superman, appeared in front of her from the sky, holding her hand and saying tenderly, "Mylah, don't be afraid, Uncle Superman will take you home..."
  • "This girl is talking to herself in her sleep, and all she can think about is Jett. Is Jett that endearing? He won the little girl's heart after only meeting her once. There is a real affinity between the two, it seems!"
  • On the other side, Jett asked Bernard directly after getting into the car, "How about the things I told you to get done?"
  • Bernard replied tactfully, "Sir, Greg won't be able to make it for tomorrow. He's still away, and the earliest he'll get here is the afternoon the day after tomorrow."
  • Jett was clearly upset when he said, "No, that won't do. Use my name to request that the military send a special plane to pick him up. I have to see him before noon tomorrow, no matter what."
  • "Okay!"
  • "One more thing. Here are two hair strands. Use them to compare the DNA. The sooner it is done, the better!"
  • One of the two strands of hair had belonged to Mylah. It got stuck to his clothes while he was carrying her earlier, and the other strand of hair was his own.
  • This time, he returned for one reason—to find his flesh and blood.
  • He was a little dubious due to Mylah's appearance and background, especially after Kimberley claimed that she had been taken from a shantytown when she was probably only seven months old by the director of the welfare home. So, whether it was true or not, he wouldn't rule anything out.
  • Bernard looked at the two strands of hair in the bag, and he immediately understood what Jett meant because he had been the one who had initially reported the incident.
  • Although he had never been a father, he recognized the importance of a child to a father.
  • All fathers would always want their kids to be safe and healthy, no matter the circumstances.
  • As a father who lost his child, his greatest desire was to find his missing child.
  • Bernard gritted his teeth and resolved to complete Jett's task flawlessly. "All right, sir, I'll get it done as soon as possible."
  • They only needed to travel by car for ten minutes to reach the White residence since the hospital was also in that vicinity.
  • Jett scanned the surroundings after getting out of the car, and he wondered in his heart that even if his wife and her family were kicked out of the White family, they wouldn't live in such a run-down neighborhood. It was not only in a run-down neighborhood but also on the outskirts of the suburbs, which was extremely inconvenient.
  • He straightened his clothes and gathered his emotions.
  • After six years, he could finally return openly and overboard and meet with the wife who had been on his mind every day and night.
  • I owed her far too much over the last six years.
  • He had been married for six years but had neglected to uphold his duties as a husband and had allowed his wife to suffer the wrath of others in silence. He was wrought with guilt.
  • "Hfff! Don't worry, Chloe. I'll do everything I can to make it up to you!" Jett vowed in private.
  • He was about to knock on the door when he noticed the Audi R8 parked downstairs.
  • Jett frowned slightly and then knocked on the door.
  • "Knock! Knock! Knock!"
  • When the people inside heard a knock on the door, they dashed over to open it.
  • A middle-aged woman smiled as she opened the door.
  • However, her smile vanished when she saw the person's face. "You? You are Jett!"
  • Janet McNeil, her mother-in-law, was the middle-aged woman who opened the door.
  • "Mom!" exclaimed Jett.
  • Janet's face was gloomy and cold, devoid of emotion. "Please do not address me as Mom. I don't know you. I don't have a son-in-law like you."
  • She couldn't bear seeing her daughter suffer at the time, so she refused to allow the two of them to be together. However, Chloe kept pleading with her, and at last, she gave in to her resistance and consented to their marriage.
  • Who knew Jett did things that cost her her dignity and almost got her kicked out of the family? She eventually had to relocate the house to the outskirts. He was the one who had caused this to happen to the entire family. Naturally, she would not bother to be nice to Jett.
  • "Mom, who is it? Is it the neighbor? Let him have a quick meal inside!" A woman walked over at this point.
  • She wore a simple, elegant dress and had long hair as smooth as a waterfall, delicately arched eyebrows, clear eyes, a lovely nose, sultry lips, and flawless fair skin. She simply exuded a noble aura.
  • The woman in question was his wife, Chloe White.
  • Jett stood there for a while after seeing her, speechless and in a daze.
  • It has been six years. My wife, who I haven't seen in six years. How are you?
  • "Chloe, how are you? It's me, Jett. I've returned!"
  • Jett's eyes were slightly moist, and there was even a slight tremor in his voice!
