Chapter 4

  • After Isabella and Andrew reached a preliminary agreement, a woman in her thirties entered with a respectful demeanor. She was well-dressed and clean-looking. She introduced herself as a professional maternity nurse named Amelia.
  • She understood it wasn't practical for a man to care for a newborn alone, so they needed a maternity nurse. However, she had heard that maternity nurses were paid quite well, and this man had no money, the expenses were all on her, making her feel a bit sorry.
  • She subconsciously glared at Andrew, who seemed puzzled by her glare.
  • "Let me hold him," Amelia said, walking to the bedside and extending her hands with a smile.
  • "Baby, he doesn't even have a name yet," Isabella said softly, looking pitiful.
  • "You can come up with one," he said.
  • "I haven't thought of one," She admitted. Her mind was a mess.
  • "Then think of one now," he replied, waiting patiently.
  • She furrowed her brow lightly and thought carefully for a while before saying, "How about Asher?"
  • It means "blessing" in Hebrew, all mothers wish for their children to have a smooth and fortunate life.
  • "Sounds good.” He nodded without any objections.
  • Afterward, Amelia took Asher from Isabella.
  • With Ava's support, Isabella followed them for a long way.
  • It was raining outside the hospital, and her eyes were wet, too.
  • "Ma'am, if you can't bear to part with him, why don't you stay with the baby?" Ava asked her.
  • She shook her head wryly, saying, "I can't take him back to the Harris family, can I?"
  • "Since Mrs. Eleanor's divorce, it is no longer a real home for you,” Ava said and sighed.
  • Isabella's damp eyes gradually became firm and cold, and her hands by her side slowly clenched into fists.
  • "I want to go back and take back everything that belongs to me."
  • Isabella dragged her heavy suitcase, step by step, walking on the cobblestone path toward the villa.
  • This mansion was her mother's dowry, now, it was occupied by David and his mistress. She couldn't help but find the irony in the situation.
  • Her father, David, was originally just a low-level civil servant. Later, he married a wealthy businessman's daughter, Eleanor Allen, who was her mother.
  • With the financial support of her mother's family, David had a successful career. He was now the Deputy Mayor of Ithaca town and was in charge of finance.
  • Isabella entered the villa alone, and there was no one to greet her, let alone a warm welcome, as she had expected.
  • In the living room, David, her stepsister Emily, and Charlotte sat on a luxurious leather sofa, chatting and laughing, appearing very harmonious.
  • Isabella's arrival shattered the cozy atmosphere.
  • "You finally decided to come back, you're such an embarrassment. You've tarnished the Harris family's reputation!" David yelled. His face, previously showing a smile, was now filled with anger.
  • Upon seeing Isabella, he slammed his hand heavily on the coffee table in front of him.
  • "Look at the two of you, father and daughter, acting like bitter enemies. David, calm down a bit. It's a good thing that your daughter is willing to return," Charlotte spoke at the right moment, smiling as she walked over to Isabella, holding her hand with a concerned expression.
  • She replied, "Thank you for your concern, Aunt. However, you'd better not worry about my affairs. Instead, pay more attention to your daughter. She's had repeated miscarriages, and it's not good for her health. If she continues to have chronic miscarriages or infertility, it will be troublesome."
  • Emily used to date the son of a real estate tycoon but later found out that he had a history of drug use. She was forced to break up and secretly terminated her pregnancy.
  • Although Charlotte kept this matter a closely guarded secret, there was no such thing as a completely sealed secret in this world. Only David remained oblivious to it.
  • "Emily had a miscarriage? What's going on?!" David was furious once again.
  • And Isabella, dragging her suitcase, moved up the stairs, unruffled. As for how to explain this to David, it was a matter for Charlotte and her daughter.
  • Isabella's room was at the end of the third floor, and it was the largest and most luxurious room in the entire villa, aside from the master bedroom.
  • She pushed the door open, and everything in the room seemed the same. Instead of her dolls on the bedside, Emily's clothes were in the wardrobe, and Emily and James' wedding photos adorned the vanity.
  • She stood in the center of the room, casually placed her suitcase to the side, then called Ava.
  • "Ava, thank you for clearing out all the unrelated items in the room. Oh, first, clean the bathroom first. I want to take a shower."
  • "Okay, Ma'am."
  • Ava was swift and efficient, and when Isabella came out of the bathroom after her shower, everything of Emily's had been thrown out, even the curtains and beddings had been replaced with new ones.
  • She sat in front of the vanity, drying her hair, looking beautiful and serene, like a painting.
  • At this moment, the room's door was suddenly pushed open, making a loud bang, and Emily stormed in.
  • "Isabella, who gave you the right to touch my room?!" Emily's voice echoed around.
  • Isabella smiled and nsaid. "James is a traditional man. Are you sure you haven't told him that you're still a virgin? If he finds out that you've also had an abortion by another man, what do you think his reaction will be?"
  • After listening, Emily's face turned pale, clearly feeling guilty.
  • Before she could finish her sentence, Emily left angrily to find Charlotte.
  • "It's just a bedroom, why compete with her? Don't sweat the small stuff. You'll marry James in a year; you should focus on him now. You're already engaged, you should urge him to get the marriage certificate sooner rather than later. It's better to avoid any unforeseen problems."
  • "You need not worry. He's already at my mercy, like a little puppy," Emily said proudly.
  • Charlotte reminded her, "Oh, you're feeling quite confident now, but remember who cried and worried that James wouldn't be responsible for her back then? If it weren't for Victoria's advice to fake a pregnancy and a miscarriage and then blame it on Isabella, do you think you could have made James submit?"
  • Emily and Victoria were identical twins, with Victoria being the more beautiful and Emily the smarter.
  • Charlotte had always been proud of her two daughters. For the past couple of years, Victoria has been abroad, busy with her rising career as an actress.
  • "Yes, everything about my sister is better in your eyes," Emily grumbled, then picked up a jewelry box from the vanity and handed it to Charlotte.
  • "James recently gave this to me, and I heard it's a family heirloom of the Brown family, which is only given to daughters-in-law."
  • Inside the box were a pair of jade bangles with a pure green color that was completely flawless.
  • Anyone could tell from the water content that it was top-quality jade. Gold has a price, but jade is priceless. These bangles were incredibly valuable and undoubtedly a family treasure.
  • Charlotte held the bangles. A thought suddenly crossed her mind.
  • She then asked, "Emily, you can get some satisfaction quite easily..."
  • Isabella's first night back in the Harris family's house was peaceful enough.
  • Next morning, after changing clothes and a quick freshening up, Isabella went downstairs.
  • David had finished his meal, placed down his utensils.
  • "Dad, my courses for this semester have ended, I want to help out at the company," she said.
  • Moonlit Art Inc. used to be an asset to the Allen family and was left by Isabella's grandfather.
  • Before her grandfather passed away, he transferred most of the company's shares into Isabella, his only granddaughter. Due to her young age, the company had been managed by David and Charlotte throughout this time.
  • Charlotte's cousin, Robert, is the current CEO of Moonlit Art Inc.
  • "Managing a company can be tough, Isabella. You're a girl, and you'll eventually get married. It's better to wait and become a proper mistress of the house." Charlotte said earnestly.
  • She certainly didn't want Isabella to regain control of the company. She had already regarded Moonlit Art Inc. as her own.
  • "Your aunt is right. Young ladies should stay out of the limelight. I'll arrange a position for you at the Cultural Bureau. You can intern there."
  • As expected, she hadn't thought they would easily agree, but she had her own methods.
  • ...
  • Luminosity Club was a chaotic place, a playground for wealthy men and a place of decline for beautiful women.
  • Isabella walked through it, feeling a bit uneasy.
  • "Olivia, are you sure Connor is here?" Isabella asked the girl following her.
  • Olivia was Ava's daughter and had been Isabella's loyal companion since childhood.
  • "The private detective said so. Mr. Connor spent the night here and hasn't left yet."
  • Connor was the Vice President of Moonlit Art Inc., the second-largest shareholder. He held a significant position in the company, and with his support, Isabella's entry into the company wouldn't be difficult.
  • However, gaining his support wouldn't be that easy, at the very least, she needed some leverage.
  • Connor was cunning, and his only drawback was his weakness for women. Unfortunately, he had a fierce wife at home.
  • Connor hasn't met her, so she's here today to catch him out.
  • An ill-intentioned man attempted to approach Isabella, but Olivia helped her divert the disgusting man.
  • Having narrowly escaped the advances of the lecherous man, Isabella walked alone down the dimly lit corridor, the sounds of pulsating music and tantalizing moans drifting from the private rooms on either side.
  • Frowning, Isabella couldn't help but wonder how she would ever find the right room amidst the maze.
  • She was lost in thought when suddenly she felt a strong push from behind. Instantly, she was enveloped in the familiar scent of vanilla, and powerful arms tightly pinned her against the wall.
  • Startled, she slammed into the cold ground, momentarily forgetting the pain.
  • The hefty man pressed her firmly against the wall with his bulk, using one large hand to tilt her face towards him.
  • "Is supporting one not enough? You're here to hunt for another man?"
