Chapter 5 The Woman Is Back
- After finishing her meal, Myra sat down in front of Dennis, bending over to plant a kiss on his tiny forehead. “Be good. Go with Aunt Shannon to check out our new home. I have to take care of some things, but I'll join you as soon as I'm done.”
- Nodding his head earnestly, Dennis said, “Myra, make sure to come back as soon as you finish your work, okay? I'll be good and wait for you at home.”
- “All right.” Myra's smile was radiant.
- Shannon's eyes sparkled as she watched, completely taken aback by the maturity this little one exhibited. He was incredibly considerate, almost too much so.
- Myra applied a touch of subtle makeup, slipped into a lightweight trench coat, and stepped on her petite heels before hailing a taxi to Gerhard Group.
- Within half an hour, she had paid and exited the taxi. It was right in the middle of the afternoon work hours, and there were quite a few people coming in and out of the corporate building. When they saw Myra across the street, all their gazes turned toward her.
- Her tall, slender figure was draped in a long khaki trench coat, dancing lightly with her movements in the gentle breeze. The afternoon sunlight cast a golden halo around her graceful silhouette.
- The woman approaching the reception desk had a strikingly pretty face, especially her eyes. They were bright and steadfast, reminiscent of finely tempered steel. A soft smile played around the corners of her mouth as she said, “Hello, Miss.”
- The receptionist was so awestruck by her aura that she was momentarily lost in admiration. It took her a while to regain her composure before she managed to say, “Hello. May I ask who you are looking for?”
- “Could you please inform Marcus that Myra has something to discuss with her? He will agree to see me.”
- “May I ask, Madam, do you have a reservation?” the receptionist continued to inquire.
- Myra was puzzled. Since when did one need to make an appointment to see a bodyguard?
- “No. Can I make a reservation now?” Myra asked.
- “All right. I'll arrange the appointment for you immediately. You'll be notified of the results in a month.”
- A month? Isn't that time frame a bit too long? Myra quietly pouted, and in the instant she turned around, she recognized the man walking toward the elevator, surrounded by a group of people in black. That familiar, aloof, and handsome face!
- Indeed, that was Marcus, the man Myra was looking for, her husband.
- Compared to five years ago, his demeanor had grown even more aloof, and he had become more steady and mature.
- Subconsciously, Myra called out, “Marcus!”
- Upon hearing the sound, the man coolly glanced sideways, ignoring it completely. Surrounded by a crowd, he entered the elevator without a care.
- The elevator doors gradually closed to each side.
- Upon seeing the situation, Myra immediately rushed over, slapping the elevator door. “Marcus, come out! I need to talk to you!”
- However, the elevator doors had already closed.
- “Is she looking for Mr. Gerhard?”
- “Could this woman possibly be Mr. Gerhard's secret lover?”
- “Don't spout nonsense. Mr. Gerhard has always loved Ms. Ashcroft the most! Their child is already so big!”
- The employees standing nervously behind Marcus were absolutely stunned. Their fingers were frantically tapping on their phone screens, and the secret WhatsApp group for employees was already blowing up with chatter.
- Marcus' brows furrowed slightly. Did I just experience an auditory hallucination, or was it a visual error? Perhaps it's the intense longing that gives rise to such psychological anticipation.
- He arrived at the CEO's office and took a seat by the floor-to-ceiling window. He pinched the bridge of his nose, his gaze inadvertently drifting down toward the street below. There, he saw her figure, confirming he wasn't dreaming.
- The girl who seemed to have appeared in a dream five years prior had vanished. Yet, astonishingly, she returned after those five years.
- Had it not been for the marriage certificate tucked away in his drawer, a constant reminder, he might have thought he was dreaming. This girl had indeed been a part of his life.
- Marcus let out a soft, self-deprecating chuckle. Five years ago, he was treated as a rebound guy. Back then, he helped her relieve her discomfort, and all he did was step out of the car to answer a phone call. By the time he returned, there was no trace of her left.
- In less than a week after that, he received her divorce agreement.
- At that time, he couldn't help thinking that woman was toying with him.
- Ever since then, every day when he woke up, his gaze would always fall upon the chillingly cold divorce agreement. Hence, for five long years, he never sought out a single trace of her.
- Has she actually come back to seek me out now? What is she looking for me for? Marcus forcefully slammed the glass in his hand onto the table, a surge of nameless anger swelling within his heart. Could it be she regretted it?
