Chapter 3

  • Laura's eyes bugged out of her head when she heard the name. "Kn--Knight-- Knight Magazine. That's the biggest magazine! You-- You didn't work there!" Laura quickly stated. Almost shocked. She had applied to that magazine and got turned down, not even an interview. She knew it was hard to get hired there, so she couldn't believe this woman worked there and was wanting to work somewhere else!
  • Gemma placed her resume down on the desk, though she knew they would also have a file from her application she still brought it. First the first time she was quite proud to use it. The look on Laura's face was everything to Gemma.
  • "I did. I worked there for three years. I even used two people as references." She said with a smug smile towards Laura.
  • Derek took the paper and looked it over. Seeing Knight Magazine as a job she had since she graduated high school.
  • "Why would you quite-- unless you were fired." Laura states, thinking she was cunning enough to know that this woman could never had just quite a job like that, it was most women's dream job.
  • "No, I quit. I wanted something more in the publishing books area. I love to read. So I thought this was more up my alley then that job."
  • Laura's jaw practically drooped. She would kill for that job yet this woman just quit. "I bet your references aren't even anyone special like Harper Black herself."
  • "No, I figured she'd be too busy to be my reference, but I did use her head of security, Morgan Gadge & Ethan Dobbs. Who are practically family to Mrs. Black." Of course she knew this better than anyone. Though they were really related to her, they were her family. Her Aunt and Uncle. And their kids were practically cousins and siblings to her. Though for her, her older brother Gabriel was more than enough.
  • The fact Her mother still used her previous Maiden name Black instead of Knight for publicity things helped her get away with people not knowing their related. Something Gemma wanted to keep as such.
  • "It's impressive you got the job right out of high school Mrs. Knight. Maybe it’s because of your last name." Derek said with a small tug of the corner of his lip.
  • That was usually Gemma's only problem, since her mother decided to rebrand a few years away and use Knight as her new Magazine name. People loved the new rebranding, but that left her last name, right there on top of her mother building in big black bold letters.
  • Gemma smiled back trying to play it off, "I suppose so. I guess it helped me out a bit to get through the door, but I managed to keep the job because I was good at it."
  • Derek gauged her reaction but from what he could see, she was genuine. And he also knew that Knight Magazine didn't just hire anyone, and they definitely didn't keep anyone who wasn't good at their job.
  • "Well, I don't see anything wrong with your résumé, and you seem very capable. So I think you'd be a great fit here at B&H."
  • "Wh--" Laura says with her neck twisting so fast to look at Derek, both Derek and Gemma were shocked she didn't break it.
  • "Can you start today?" Derek asks.
  • Gemma beamed, excited she got the job and she didn't have to use her mother or fathers name, though her last name was a clear indicator to the Knight Photography company her father owns, and even though he's famous for his photographs there are other people with that last name and she always just made it seem that way.
  • "Of course." Gemma said back.
