Chapter 1

  • Gemma Knight looked up at the building one last time to make sure she was in the right place.
  • B&H. It was a publishing agency.
  • Gemma had applied to a few different places and this is one of the ones that called her back for an interview. Her phone rang in her pocket, pulling it out and answering, "I'm not skipping the interview mom."
  • Harper Knight, but also known as Harper Black the famous Magazine owner. "But you can have any position in my company you want." Harper replied.
  • "I want to get something on my own, without yours or dad help. Is that so hard?"
  • "Of course not," her mother replied. "But I'm just saying, you don't have to go through all of this to get a job when you can just have one with me.
  • “Are you going to tell them I’m your mother?”
  • “Absolutely Not!” Gemma said quickly causing her mother to laugh.
  • “God. Don’t be so embarrassed in your mom!”
  • Gemma laughed. “That’s not it. And you know it. But when people know you’re my mom they treat me differently. And I’d like to get a job on my own without knowing it’s only cause I’m your daughter or even dad’s.”
  • Harper sighed on the other side of the phone. “I get it your hard working and independent. You want to make your own name for yourself. Without my name."
  • "Exactly."
  • Harper laughed. "And what do you have on your resume for previous jobs?"
  • Gemma made annoying face although she knew her mother couldn't see it, she knew she’d feel the annoyance through the phone. "I put your company. But I used Aunt Morgan as a reference and Uncle Ethan."
  • Her mother laughed even more knowing she would use anyone but her and her father. But she also understood and she wanted her Daughter to accomplish whatever she wanted, however she wanted to do it. Because she knew if anyone could it be her. "Well, oh alright. But if you change your mind I'm one call away."
  • "I know, I’ll call after my interview, I gotta go now mom." Gemma hung up and rushed inside. Heading up to the fifth and top floor of the building where she was told her interview would be at.
  • When she got upstairs she let the front lady know and took a seat. She had been told someone from the hiring department would conduct her interview. But as the minutes passed and no one called her she wondered why.
  • Then a tall handsome man stepped to the front desk, his eyes darted to Gemma and stayed there for a bit longer than he even realized. Derek finally looked away and back at Lorna at the front desk. She didn't normally sit there, but since his last receptionist quit he needed someone until they hired someone new.
  • "Who's that?" Derek asked Lorna as she glanced once more at Gemma who still hadn't taken her eyes off of him.
  • "Oh, she's here for the receptionist and book editor you needed." Lorna quickly says. "I had called the hiring department but no one has come to interview her."
  • Derek gave a curt nod. "Send to my office. I’ll do the interview myself." Derek said before he walked away. Leaving Lorna confused for a moment.
  • She stuttered. "I-- In-- In your office sir?"
  • Derek didn't bother to turn around, he just kept walking towards his office as he said "That is what I said Lorna." He stepped into the doorway of his office. "Send her in."
  • Gemma stared blinking for a moment before she looked at the lady called Lorna. Lorna moved her head indicating to go on ahead and head to the office. Gemma gulped before she took a deep breath and headed that way. Stepping in the office.
  • Derek sat behind his desk as usual, no emotion on his face as he looked at his computer screen. "Close the door and sit down please." He said nonchalantly as he typed away.
