Chapter 2
- Gemma did as he asked and shut the door and took a sit across from him. She looked around the room, trying to not to stare at the man any more than she already had. Something she never did. But something about this man was different. Or maybe it was just how dam handsome he is.
- "Name." He tone was bore of anything, almost like this was an annoyance to interview her, himself.
- "Gemma Knight." She said softly.
- Finally he looked away from his desktop screen and really looked at her. Beautiful was the first word that came to find for him. A light breeze of freckles that coated the tops of her cheeks, rosy pink lips, short brown hair. And those hazel eyes staring right back at him.
- "Gemma, it’s nice to meet you. I'm Derek Hanes. Owner of B&H." He looked away and back at his computer. "I’ll be honest with you, a lot of people have applied for this position. And I hired many, and they all end up quitting because it’s too much for them. What makes you think you can do this job?"
- "First, I'm not a quitter. So I wouldn't just up and quit not even when things get hard, but I also think I'm qualified because I have worked as a receptionist before and though I haven't done manuscripts per say I have overviewed magazine layouts which I think would relay closely."
- Derek looked at her seriously. "You do realize this job is two in one. You have to find a way to juggle both and sometimes that also intel's you being my assistant. That means you come with me on business trips. If I call you at 2am because we need something fixed by a deadline I need you to answer and get it done. No matter where you are, what you’re doing, or what time it is."
- "I understand." She says softly back.
- Derek scrutinizes her. "Most say that. Wh--"
- "Derek!" Gemma turns to see a thin tall blonde enter the office, She gives Gemma a look over with a scowl before turning back to Derek with a smile.
- "I'm busy as you can see Laura. You need to leave." Derek say calmly.
- "I heard you were doing an interview yourself and thought this must be an amazing candidate since you never do this." She says ignoring Derek's request for her to leave. Laura walks around the desk and puts a hand on Derek's shoulder as if giving Gemma a warning to stay back and stay away.
- "Again, you don't need to be here." He says as he turns his chair enough to pull her hand from his shoulder. The look on his face was that of annoyance.
- "It's nice to meet you I'm Laura. Though I have to say, I don't think you'd fit in very well here. Where a fast pace place and you look like you'd break if the wind blew you to hard."
- Gemma almost scuffed at her comment. Considering the woman looked like a twig who skipped meals and ate salads and kale smoothies. But Gemma kept her comment to herself only giving a small smirk. One Derek could tell was one of great strength. He watched her as she interacted with Laura. Most who came across the woman broke and cried. And though Derek had much resentment for the woman, she did her job to dam well to fire her.
- "I think I can manage just fine. A little breeze never hurt anyone. I mean especially for someone with meat on her bones."
- Derek chocked on a chuckle, one that didn't get past Laura. Derek never laughed, for anyone. Yet there he was clearing his throat and hiding his amusement. "Where was I-- Ah, I was asking where did you work last? You said you've reviewed Magazine layouts."
- Gemma turned back to Derek. And though it pained her to use her mother company, he wouldn't know it was her mothers, though she did work for her, for quite a few years after graduating. "I worked for Knight Magazine." She said her previous tone of annoyance she used toward Laura now gone and replaced with a much softer and sweeter tone.
- Laura's eyes bugged out of her head when she heard the name. "Knight-- Knight Magazine. That's the biggest magazine! You-- You didn't work there!" Laura quickly stated. Almost shocked. She had applied to that magazine and got turned down, not even an interview. She knew it was hard to get hired there, so she couldn't believe this woman worked there and was wanting to work somewhere else!
