• The pre-event walkthrough for the corporate dinner was supposed to last twenty minutes.
• Sylvia arrived at the private dining room on the thirtieth floor with her tablet and the final floor plan. The venue coordinator had already placed the table markers. She was checking sight lines against the revised seating chart when Alex entered through the main doors, alone, without the usual advance notice that accompanied client arrivals.
• She straightened. The professional surface she had maintained since the plaza held, but the residual awareness of the stalled elevator and the unfinished want beneath it rose immediately, unhelpful and clear.
