Chapter 39
- The university bell rang, signaling the start of the next period. Ariel stood in the hallway, frozen. She knew that right now, in a classroom just two buildings away, Luther was starting his lecture. Usually, she was the first one in her seat, eager to hear him speak. Even though he hurt her, she couldn’t deny the fact that she missed him. But today, she couldn't face him. She couldn't sit there for an hour, pretending to take notes on literature, while the plastic bag of pills in her backpack felt like it weighed a thousand pounds.
- She felt like if she looked at him, he would see the guilt written all over her face. She couldn't look into his eyes knowing that she was holding the very thing that could destroy his entire career.
- Instead of going to class, Ariel turned around and headed for the library. She didn't go to the main floor where all the students hung out. She went up to the third floor, a quiet section full of old, dusty books that nobody ever checked out. She found a private study room in the far corner and closed the door behind her.
