  • Kali startled awake in a pool of her sweat, her chest rising and falling hurriedly. She sat up quickly, noting there was no memory of a nightmare in her head. Struggling to find balance, her hands roamed the bed and her mind accepted not-so-later that Clea wasn’t here. She sighed heavily and put her face in her hands.
  • It hadn’t been easy, falling asleep. And what happened with tentative sleep was that they tended to end with a frightful awakening.
  • She bit hard on her lips, bringing her breathing to a steady rhythm. After she could feel herself calming, she gently pried herself off the bed. The morning weakness was yet to leave. When her feet touched the floor, she snatched them back up. The cold was piercing. Why then had she woken up sweating?
