Chapter 6

  • Chloe POV
  • Mr. Arden and I arrive at the Arden Firm at ten minutes before seven. I feel late, but at least I am with him, so technically, I am not late. Mr. Arden walks me through all of the security checkpoints to put me at ease.
  • "I know this is overboard, but I want you to feel secure here," Mr. Arden says.
  • Mr. Arden walks me to my office. It is right down the hall from his. "Andrea will train you today. I know you will catch on quickly. I will take the two of you to lunch at eleven. She should be here in a few minutes if you want to wait in your office. As soon as you turn on your computer, it will clock you in for the day. Andrea will go over everything with you. I have to go," Mr. Arden says. He is gone before I can say thank you.
  • I go into my office and sit down. I look at the clock; it is already seven. I turn on my computer. It asks for my birthday to clock in for the day. I type in my birthday and hit enter just as a bubbly brunette walks into my office.
  • "Hello, Chloe," Andrea says. She pulls a chair up to mine and sits down.
  • "Hi, it is good to meet you," I say.
  • She set two bottles of water down on the desk. "I grabbed us some water from the break room. We have a lot to do over," Andrea says.
  • Andrea goes right into it. She goes over the accounts and everything I am expected to do every day. It is not hard and not anything different from what I was going at Capital Financial Holdings.
  • "You are catching on quick," Andrea says.
  • "I worked at CFH for the last four years," I say.
  • Mr. Arden walks by the office. He does not stop. "Is he not the hunkiest piece of meat ever," Andrea says.
  • "I have not noticed," I say. Andrea snaps her head around.
  • "Really, well, he is bad to the bone. Let me tell you. He has a trail of broken hearts leading all the way to his door. He will never settle down and never sees the same woman for very long. He is nice to look at it, but not the type of man you want to get involved with seriously. He is more of a good time and forget he exists afterward," Andrea says.
  • I wonder if she knows from personal experience. "He said he is taking us to lunch at eleven," I say.
  • "One of the perks of being under him. He will take you to lunch, and we get lots of bonuses. He good to his people," Andrea says.
  • "Sounds wonderful," I say.
  • Andrea changes the subject. She shows me more of the system. Time flies, and the next thing I know, Mr. Arden is standing at my office door, ready to go to lunch.
  • "Are you ladies ready?" Mr. Arden asks.
  • Andrea jumps out of her seat. She is ready to go. "Yes, I am starving," she says.
  • I grab my phone and purse. I walk behind the two of them to the elevator. "How is it going?" Mr. Arden asks me.
  • "I am catching on to the system," I say.
  • "She is going great. I think she will be ready to fly solo in a few days," Andrea says.
  • "Good, I have plans for her," Mr. Arden says.
  • I wonder what he means by that. "The system is not that different from CHF. I should be fine, and if I have any problems, I am sure I can get Andrea to help me," I say.
  • "Or me. You can always come to me for help," Mr. Arden says.
  • "Thank you, but I will try not to bother you," I say.
  • Mr. Arden reaches over and touches my hand. "It is no bother," he says.
  • We get out of the elevator and walk across to the private parking area. "Before I forget, here are your keys. I will make sure you have everything else you need by the end of the day. I will bring it to you before you leave. That Audi over there is yours," Mr. Arden says, pointing to a silver Audi. It still has the sticker on the window.
  • "That is a nice car," I say. I was not expecting a car this nice.
  • "Only the best for my best employees," Mr. Arden says.
  • We go to lunch at a restaurant downtown. Andrea does most of the talking. I try just to relax and be myself. It is hard for me starting over and getting all of this attention from Mr. Arden. After Lunch, we get into the car to go back to the office. The driver pulls into a bank next to the Arden Firm.
  • "Andrea, I have some business I need you to take care of inside; the branch manager is waiting on you. It is the Arrington accounts. I need you to call me as soon as you finish. I will train Chloe for the rest of the day," Mr. Arden says.
  • Andrea gets out of the car quickly and goes into the bank. "Is this something we often do?" I ask.
  • "Sometimes, if we find something off, we will handle it for the client. Andrea is good at this, and besides, it gives me more time with you. I like to know my people, and you, Miss Chloe are mysterious," Mr. Arden says.
  • "There is nothing mysterious about me," I say.
  • "I do not believe that. Tell me about you," Mr. Arden says.
  • I turn in my seat to face him. "Mr. Arden, there is really nothing to tell," I say.
  • "Call me Axel outside the office. I do not believe that Chloe. There is something wonderful behind those eyes, and I want to know more," Mr. Arden says.
  • I sit in my seat, stunned. I hope he does not think that weak line will work on me. I am not about to get involved with my boss. I am shaking by the time the car is parked.
  • "Chloe, I am not trying anything on you. I only want to know more about you," Mr. Arden says.
  • "I think we should get back to work," I say. I open the door to the car and get out. I start making my way back to the elevator when he runs up behind me.
  • "I am sorry, I should not have said that. Let me take you to dinner tonight after work, and we can talk," Mr. Arden says.
  • "Okay, but for the rest of the day, it is business only, understood," I say to him.
  • "I can do that," Mr. Arden says.
