Chapter 39 Breaking Shadows

  • Light crawled back into the sanctuary, slow and sneaky, as I blinked at the jittery candlelight. Everything smelled like wet dirt, crushed herbs, and smoke—like someone had tried to cover up the stink of old secrets with incense, but it just made it weirder. The stone walls? Cold as regret. I pressed my fingers against them, rough as hell, and not giving me any comfort.
  • Tried to sit up—no dice. My limbs felt like lead pipes, throbbing. My vision went all funhouse mirror. Panic fluttered in my chest, fast and stupid.
  • Selene hovered nearby, watching me with those silver eyes of hers. They always look so chill, but I could see my fear bouncing around in them.
