Chapter 6 He Could Have Anything He Wanted

  • The Wright family did not reside in a posh area.
  • Most of the residents in the area were from the working class.
  • Therefore, they were very impressed to see a military off-road vehicle stopped at the entrance of the residential area because they knew anyone who drove this type of vehicle would be someone important.
  • They were more in awe when they saw Austin Brigham confidently getting into the passenger side of the vehicle.
  • For someone as young as Austin, who had a chauffeur with a military off-road vehicle, he must be the crème de la crème of the military.
  • Many of them wished their sons were as successful as Austin.
  • Some of them even started to daydream about Austin as their son-in-law!
  • One would wonder what Liam and Meadow would think if they witnessed that.
  • Venom Snake changed his demeanor completely when Austin got into the car. He was no longer as stern as he was at the Brigham family's ancestral house.
  • At that moment, he smiled like a pet snake, instead of a venomous snake, as his name suggested.
  • All his authoritative appearance disappeared when he was in front of the King of the Southern Continent, as if he was still the clumsy rookie when Austin trained him at the beginning of his military career.
  • Venom Snake was an excellent military man trained by Austin.
  • He was transferred to Fairville because of his injury.
  • On the other hand, it could also be the upper management wanted him to pave the way for Austin.
  • Venom Snake drove there alone after leaving the Brigham family's ancestral house, waiting for Austin.
  • He thought he would have to wait for long, but he did not expect to see Austin so soon.
  • "Sir, why didn't you tell them the truth? They would never treat you this way if they know who you are," said Venom Snake, confused at Austin tolerating discrimination from others.
  • "This is a family, not a battlefield. So I want them to accept me, not fear my status. Well, at least I was not banished from the Brigham family nor divorced by my wife. So there's still hope," said Austin calmly, recalling his experiences after returning from the military.
  • They were not too bad.
  • Austin thought there could be worse.
  • "Sir, allow me to be candid. I think you were too low-key this time. No one from the Brigham family or the Wright family will dare to say a word if you come as the King of the Southern Continent. They would fight to serve you as the king, even the old hag from the Brigham family!"
  • Venom Snake was very protective of Austin.
  • He should never be treated this way!
  • Austin Brigham, the King of the Southern Continent, the most heroic, most decorated, and most feared by the enemies!
  • "Venom Snake, you know I don't like to be high-profile. Also, once the Brigham family knows my identity, they would use my name to create trouble," said Austin, shaking his head.
  • Furthermore, Austin did not want his identity as the King of the Southern Continent to hinder him from seeking the truth.
  • This tiny problem was nothing compared to the obstacles he experienced during his ten years of military life.
  • "Let's get back to work, Venom Snake."
  • Once Austin changed the topic from personal affairs to work, his aura changed. Once again, he became the King of the Southern Continent.
  • Venom Snake became as serious as a warrior waiting to charge on command. His eyes were sharp like an eagle.
  • "Sir, they had given the order," said Venom Snake in a low voice.
  • "Tell me. What's my assignment?"
  • Venom Snake picked up a paper envelope and took out the appointment letter.
  • "The Ministry of Defence had decided that Austin Brigham shall retain his position in the southern continent and will report for duty at Synnefoville."
  • Synnefoville? Is there a place like this in the southern continent?
  • Austin was puzzled.
  • He had never heard of a place called Synnefoville.
  • "There wasn't. The upper management had decided to merge Fairville and Rudville and called it Synnefoville."
  • Austin finally understood after listening to Venom Snake's explanation.
  • They wanted him to take charge of the newly formed city!
  • When two places merged into one, there would be plenty of logistics and messy politics involved during the transition period. This was not an easy job for anybody.
  • And The King of the Southern Continent would be the best candidate to oversee the transition.
  • Those cunning old men!
  • Austin thought he could live more leisurely this time.
  • Instead, those old men in the upper management gave him such a big assignment.
  • Austin did not want to put himself in this mess.
  • "Venom Snake, call them immediately and tell them I refused the assignment," he said after thinking for a while.
  • "Sir, do you think the assignment is too small?" asked Venom Snake curiously.
  • "I don't care about the assignment. I just want to live my life and spend more time with my wife," said Austin calmly.
  • He would be so busy and exhausted if he took up the assignment and had no time for his wife.
  • Austin did not want to be away from Deborah anymore.
  • "Sir, everyone wants fame and wealth, but you are letting all that go!" Venom Snake was appalled by Austin's decision.
  • Austin had been ruling the southern continent and protecting the country for ten years. Yet, he was giving up everything.
  • What a waste of talent!
  • "Venom Snake, I'm the King of the Southern Continent. I could have anything I want," smiled Austin.
  • And he wanted a happy family.
  • If the King of the Southern Continent said so, there was nothing much Venom Snake could say.
  • After all, if Austin changed his mind one day, he could just ask them again.
  • "There was another reason I must refuse the assignment," said Austin.
  • "Brigham Corporation would definitely be involved if Fairville and Rudville were merged.
  • If I helped Brigham Corporation while I was governing the new city, what would others think about Brigham Corporation? Brigham Corporation is my father's life work. I can't let it be caught in scandals like this. It could destroy the company!" explained Austin.
  • He could ignore everyone in the Brigham family, but he could never harm the Brigham Corporation founded by his father, Richard Brigham.
  • Venom Snake finally understood the reason behind Austin's decision.
  • Even though he thought Austin's decision was well-thought-out, Venom Snake still felt that Austin deserved more for his contribution to the country. However, he held his tongue.
  • The next day, Austin went to the Fairview Building, the Brigham Corporation's headquarters.
  • Austin had mixed feelings as he took in the sight of the humble building.
  • When Richard Brigham started the Brigham Corporation, its main business was real estate.
  • Since then, the Brigham Corporation had grown and become the main source of income for the Brigham family.
  • Looking at the company his father built from nothing, Austin swore to himself that he would make Brigham Corporation the most successful company in the new city.
  • "Austin Brigham! The Brigham family had banished you. Where else can you go other than the Wright family?"
  • At that moment, Austin heard Deborah's voice.
  • He turned around and saw Deborah in a black dress, beautiful as always.
  • "I'm currently staying at a hotel, will look for another place when everything settles in," Austin told her honestly.
  • Hearing that, Deborah started to sway.
  • Even though Austin was a Brigham, he did not get their recognition.
  • Currently, he had nowhere to go, and he would never get the inheritance.
  • Meanwhile, Austin's wife, Deborah, had asked him to stay elsewhere.
  • Imagine the gossip if someone found this out.
  • However, Deborah kept reminding herself not to go soft on Austin. Therefore, she was still cold toward Austin.
  • "Go to the meeting with me. Old Mrs. Brigham is going to make an important announcement," said Deborah in a cold tone.
  • In her opinion, the announcement could be related to Austin.
