Chapter 13 Extortion

  • “You…”
  • Gillian Wesley bit her lips and was suddenly lost for words facing the most familiar woman she knew.
  • She was aware that Elizabeth Wesley never liked her. Since she was little, Elizabeth would treat Lillian and her differently. Even so, Elizabeth had never coerced her in this manner.
  • No, instead of coercing, it looked more like Elizabeth was eager to destroy her!
  • “What is it now? Don’t you at least have some pocket money after marrying Henry Porter?” Elizabeth sized up Gillian in disbelief.
  • Gillian endured the sorrow that flooded her heart and asked coldly, “How much?”
  • A dash of joy quickly overtook the disappointment on Elizabeth’s face. She stretched out five fingers without hesitation. “This much!”
  • “Sure!” Gillian seized the paper and pen from Elizabeth’s hands. “Fifty thousand. I’ll make the payment in full within half a year!”
  • “Fifty thousand?” Elizabeth stepped forward to snatch the paper back. “Gillian Wesley, are you joking with me? You might’ve underestimated your values. Look, five million including interests, not a penny less!”
  • Elizabeth then slammed the paper on the desk, then turned around to block the door. “If you don’t write the debt note today, don’t even dream of walking out of this door!”
  • “Mom, is money all you can use to measure our relationship?” Tears welled up in Gillian’s expressive eyes, but she stopped it from flowing down her cheeks. “Did you raise me just to sell me off to a wealthy family?”
  • Seeing that Gillian was suddenly overwhelmed with emotions, Elizabeth froze for a second but swiftly reverted to the same greedy look earlier. “We can agree to disagree. Regardless, I’ve spent too much money and effort on you all these years. It’s worth far more than five million! If you have the conscience, pay me what you owe!”
  • Hot briny tears finally escaped Gillian’s eyes and streamed down uncontrollably.
  • She turned around, rubbed the tears off her face with the back of her hand, and held the pen in her heavily-shaking hand. “Listen! The day I pay off the money is the day I officially cut ties with the Wesley family!”
  • Her voice was shuddering involuntarily, but her adamance was undeniable.
  • Finishing what she had to say, she hastily wrote a few lines on the paper and signed her name.
  • Elizabeth snuck a peek at the debt note. When she saw the words ‘five million’, greed immediately exploded in her eyes like fireworks.
  • “Bang!” Gillian slammed the pen on the desk heftily, opened the door with a jerk, and went downstairs without turning back.
  • Goodbye, Wesleys!
  • The car was driven into an affluent suburb and came to a steady halt before an extravagantly craved steel gate, obsidian in color.
  • When Gillian raised her eyes, the steel gate had gradually opened with a click on the remote control. Following that, what filled her eyes was a flurry of green plants and an illuminating swimming pool under the sunlight. Behind the spacious area was a three-storey detached house.
  • Compared to the yard of the Wesley’s, which was about the size of a park, this yard wasn’t much bigger. But there wasn’t many trees in Gillian’s line of sight. She could see the entire area at a glance, which boasted a magnificent view.
  • “Young Master, Madam, we’ve arrived.” Kevin Black reported to them before ordering the chauffeur to stop the car.
  • Gillian didn’t need prompting. She got off the car and helped Henry out of the vehicle before wheeling him into the house.
  • Henry patted Gillian’s hand, saying, “Gillian, this place is a little small, but grandpa bought this since the agreement of our marriage years ago. I’d spend a few days in a year here.”
  • So that was the case.
  • Gillian shook her head with a beaming smile. “This is a great place. It’s harmonious here.”
  • Henry nodded, “Good to know that you like it.”
  • They had just entered the living area when a middle-aged maid welcomed them zealously. “Young Master, Madam, welcome home. Dinner has been prepared.”
  • “Gillian, this is Madam Franklin, she’s in charge of our meals and daily routine.” Henry paused for a moment before adding, “Kevin and Madam Franklin stay at the ground floor while we stay upstairs.”
  • “Nice to meet you, Madam Franklin! Thank you for the preparation!”
  • “Madam, you’re too humble! You must be hungry, let’s eat!” Madam Franklin ushered them to the dining room with a placid smile.
  • Looking at the super king bed in the bedroom, Gillian was jaw-dropped for a second… Despite being married to Henry, she lacked the courage to sleep next to a stranger.
  • She knew that Henry was crippled from the waist down and couldn’t do much to her, but…
  • Just as Gillian was soliloquizing to herself, the man’s voice came from behind, “Gillian, you must be tired after the hectic day. Take a shower and go to bed early. I’ll take the couch tonight.”
  • “Huh?” Gillian was startled. She promptly waggled her hands, “No, don’t! You take the bed! You need a good rest!”
  • “Hoho,” Henry chuckled. Despite being blind, the glittering light in his eyes was as dazzling as a cluster of tiny diamonds. “I have work to deal with tonight. The bed is big enough. Don’t worry, I won’t cross the line even if I were to share the bed with you.”
  • Finishing what he had to say, the man wheeled around and left the door precisely, then made a precise turn before heading towards the study room next door.
  • Gillian watched his captivating figure disappear out of her sight with mixed feelings.
  • So, am I spending the rest of my life with him now?
