Chapter 7

  • ...I want never to leave you but how can I stay with you when you are not mine either...
  • Evelyn POV:-
  • My eyes slowly opened and adjusted themselves to see clearly. The sunlight penetrating through the window made the room lit. I was laying on my stomach with my arms and legs stretched out. I yawn and frown at the sunlight that was igniting the room. I avert my gaze from the window to the bed and my eyes widened as I realize that I am not in my bed and whatever happened yesterday was true. I laid there still like I am drowned in the pool of my thoughts. I closed my eyes and sat on the bed. I rubbed my eyes and stayed in my messy form.
  • After a while, my eyes fell upon Lawrence who was sleeping peacefully yet with discomfort on the couch. I kept looking at him as the flashbacks from yesterday rushed in my mind.
  • I deeply sighed. No matter what, I am married now and I also promised that I'll be a good wife. I got out of the bed and took a quick shower. My suitcase arrived early in the morning, I have already put my clothes in the closet. I wore a long blue embroidered shirt with lacy sleeves, the dress stops at my knees. I wore matching tights with it too. It's my first day of marriage, I should look good. After being satisfied that I am looking good, I sat on the bed.
  • I put my chin on my palm and began to think. What should I do? Maybe I'll call mother. No, maybe it's too soon. Today is Sunday so what I should do? My lips form a thin line as the realization hit me that I have to go down there as Lawrence wife and greet everyone, including Adrian. My heart began to beat fast at the thought of how awkward it's gonna be. I gulped.
  • No, don't think about him. You are married, You can't do it.
  • Lawrence is my husband and I have to think about him and him only. I stood up and decided to do what Mother does on Sunday.
  • I stood up and without looking at Lawrence, I walked out of the room. I went to the kitchen and began to prepare breakfast for everyone. As I was cooking, I saw Aunt Kyla coming into the kitchen. I smiled at her and greeted her with a 'Good Morning'.
  • "Good Morning Evelyn. What are you doing here?" Aunt asked as I replied, "I am making breakfast for everyone."
  • "Sweetheart, You don't have to do it. It's your first day here." Aunt said reassuringly. I gave them my usual bright smile as I said,
  • "It's not. I am here ever since I was born."
  • "I mean as Mrs Bayford." Aunt tried to reason but I replied, "I am still your daughter." She sighed as she put her hands in the air. She knows that I am stubborn and if once I want to do something, I will do it. After convincing her to allow me to make breakfast, I cooked Pancakes for Lawrence because he liked them a lot and Boiled eggs for Adrian and French Toast for Aunt and Uncle.
  • After cooking breakfast, I went to wake Lawrence up. On my way, I bump into Adrian. My heart began to thump loudly, not because of that feeling of fondness I used to feel about him. It was something else, It was nothing but fear.
  • Fear of what I am not aware yet. I mumbled a sorry and left for my room. Adrian is the person I want to stay away at all cost.
  • I entered the room and saw Lawrence still sleeping.
  • "Lawrence.." I called out his name softly but he didn't even flinch.
  • "Lawrence," I called a little louder this time but still no answer. I walked closer and shook him slightly. "Lawrence!" I said a little loudly. His eyebrows twitch as he growled. My heart skipped a beat when I heard it. I was about to shook him again but he suddenly sat and spoke up,
  • "I am Awake!" I squeak and stumble back. Lawrence slowly opened his eyes and looked at my scared form. A smirk was formed on his face as he said,
  • "Evelyn also get scared?" He teased as I pout and threw a pillow at him which he caught easily.
  • "And here I am being a good wife cooking breakfast for you and you... You are not getting anything." I said as I turned to leave.
  • "Hey! I am sorry. At least don't take away my breakfast." He said as he stood up. I close my arms at my chest, "The food made by me isn't for Lawrence Bayford."
  • "You also bear my name. You are not eating too then."
  • "My first name is not Lawrence." I retorted. I and Lawrence are always like this. Playful.
  • "At least, Can I have breakfast? I won't tell anyone that you got scared." He said still teasing me.
  • "If you don't come down in 10 minutes, I'll tell everyone that you are begging me to give you breakfast," I smirk. We stare at each other for a few second and began to laugh.
  • "Okay. Okay, I am coming." Lawrence said.
  • "I am waiting for you," I said with a grin.
  • "You don't have to. You can go and eat." Lawrence said.
  • "Lawrence, I don't know what I good wife is but to me my mother is a great example of how a wife should be. And learning from her, I am waiting for you here and we'll leave the room together." I told him. He looked at me for a few second and left before saying,
  • "At least you have learned something from Aunt." Before I can say anything he went inside the bathroom. I pouted and picked the blanket that was thrown on the floor and fold it neatly and put it on the bed. I smiled a little, mine and Lawrence relation is same as before. Lawrence is a gentleman but we tease each other a lot.
  • I don't know what I should be doing, I am just doing what I have seen my mother doing in her life for father. And the way she takes care of father, I'll take care of Lawrence. I smiled sadly, I am missing my parents. I wish they were here.
  • I was lost in my thoughts, I didn't even notice Lawrence walked out of the bathroom. I looked at him as we both left the room.
  • We reached the hall as everyone stopped their activity just to look at us. We greeted everyone.
  • "May God bless you both." Aunt Camila said. I passed her a smiled and we took a seat. My whole being went numb when I saw Adrian sitting in front of me. I let out rapid breaths to myself. Our eyes met for a second and a glint of hurt behind that smile of Adrian was clear. I startle at this and avert my eyes from him, I didn't dare to meet his gaze again. Even though it didn't seem like I am crumbling but I was extremely distressed in Adrian's presence.
  • Just what happened to me in one day? The person I die to get some attention now I want to be unnoticed and away from him. My heart which used to flutter with happiness by being this close is not there anymore. My feelings; My lifetime feelings changed in just a day. I gulped, Lawrence took notice of my distress and asked,
  • "Are you alright Evelyn?" I nodded and smile at him. He stared at me for a few seconds and turned to his food and began to eat again.
  • All the feelings I used to feel about Adrian are now replaced by only one emotion-Fear.
  • I looked at Lawrence smile and immediately understood why I am afraid.
  • I am agitated because of the dread that Lawrence might not know about my crush on Adrian. That moment, the unpleasant feeling of great apprehension filled me. Just a day of my marriage and I am getting away from Adrian and was pulling closer to Lawrence; whom I never like that before. Is marriage that powerful?
  • Am I going to spend my whole life in that dread?
  • Should I tell Lawrence about it? No, No, No.
  • The whole breakfast was filled with the sound of chattering. But my mind is somewhere else. It was filled with stress and unfathomable thoughts.
  • "Evelyn?" I heard Uncle Shawn calling my name.
  • "Yes?" I asked. "Dear, I was saying that you never got a chance to prepare for the wedding. That's why I was thinking that we'll delay the reception and prepare everything according to your liking. You can even choose the dress by yourself instead of wearing the dress chosen by Lawrence." Uncle explained as I nodded and began to say,
  • "Uncle you don't have to. I am fine with everything. As for the dress, I want Lawrence to choose another dress for me according to my liking." I looked at Lawrence.
  • "I don't mind. I already know what kind of dress you'll like." Lawrence said shrugging his shoulders. I smiled widely but Uncle said,
  • "Evelyn, At least you don't have to act like a stranger. You'll prepare everything for the reception, including Its new date." It's useless to argue with uncle. I simply smiled and said, "Okay."
  • During breakfast, I avoided making any contact with Adrian. My mind fills with strange thoughts whenever I look at him or thought about him.
  • "Adrian, After breakfast help Evelyn in deciding the location." My throat dried when I heard this.
  • "Okay," Adrian said. I am not okay with it!
  • "It's alright. You don't have to." I said, preventing to say even his name. He smirked at me and said, "Then ask for brother's help. Brother, help your wife." Lawrence smirked back at Adrian and said, "Oh, I want a surprise. I am not doing anything at all." I frowned and said, "What a great way to back away." At my statement, everyone began to laugh.
  • "You know Evelyn, I don't like arranging things and all," Lawrence said.
  • "That's why you don't even arrange your meetings," Adrian added. I sighed and began to eat too.
  • After breakfast, my mind went hazy at the thought of being with Adrian. Maybe I can test myself about what I am feeling and whether I can get over him or not. I took a deep breath and prepare myself mentally.
  • From now on, Everything would be a trial for me. A cruel game of fate that I must win. I have to explore those inexplicable feelings and have to stand firm and overcome every obstacle that's gonna come in my path. With that heavy burden on my shoulders, I'll work my marriage out...
