Chapter 5 – Dogs Are Cute!

  • Celine
  • I woke up this morning, feeling refreshed and happy. No disturbances at the door, no annoying devil to deal with. Just me and my free time, fresh fruit, vegetables, and some good deeds to warm my heart. I opened the door, looked left and right to make sure the devil doesn’t sneak up on me. No devil is found, so I smiled and be on my merry way.
  • “Good morning, where are we going today?” The devil chimed.
  • “What the fuck are you doing here?” I glared at him.
  • “I said, I will be back. I never go back on my word. I want to make it up to you.” The devil replied.
  • “Don’t you have work to do?” I asked.
  • “Andrew got it.” The devil said.
  • “Poor Andrew.” I said and started walking away.
  • Of course, he followed me to the farmer’s market and everywhere else. Since I couldn’t shake him off, it is best to ignore the shameless leech that had attach itself to me. However, it was proven rather difficult. He never let me forget that he existed by bothering me in every way possible.
  • From little comments, to trying out all the food the place had to offer with me. For someone who has never been here before, he sure knows a lot about it. The point was confirmed when I tried to slip away, undetected.
  • It works…for 2 minutes!
  • “Ugh!” I groaned, seeing the devil and his smug.
  • He laughed at the eye rolled and followed me like a lost child. God, when will he leave me alone?
  • “Never.” The devil replied as if he could read my mind.
  • Can you read mind now? I thought.
  • “No, but it is written all over your face.” I walked past him. Of course, he follows me.
  • “If you want to make it up to me then followed me.” I said and led the way.
  • “Anytime.” The devil replied and walked quietly behind me.
  • I smiled, the devil is about to meet his maker. We took another trip around the whole farmer’s market. This time I stopped at every single stall, buying everything the place had to offer because now I have a bell boy with me.
  • By the time I was done, both of his hands were full. He barely had anywhere to walk as he stuttered and stumbled, but never complained.
  • Be open-minded, he might surprise you.
  • My mother’s words come back to me and my heart soften. When I look at him now, I don’t see a domineering devil but a man. A friend, one might call it. Which means his apology is sincere and he just made a mistake. Ok, I will give him a chance – after we got back. Letting him go now will be too easy, so I made him walk all the way home and up the stairs.
  • “You can put the stuff over there.” I pointed to counter in the kitchen.
  • “So, am I forgiven?” He said out of breath.
  • Not yet, I have one more thing. My arms flew over his neck, my legs encased his torso, with a smug on my face. I moved in, closing the distance between us.
  • “Really? Is all you got?” I stopped, expecting a violent outburst, but he chuckled. “For a young woman you suck at seducing men. Tell me how many men you have had sex with?” The devil asked bluntly.
  • What the fuck? Who ask a woman that kind of question. Enraged, I tried to push him away, but he refused to let go. A triumphant smiled grace his face as the table had turned. My planned backfired and he began closing in on me.
  • I was not one to give in so easily. So, I avoided his advanced and went for the ear with my razor-sharp teeth. Plain old revenged. He screamed so loud, I bet it had woken my neighbor. Only when I felt freedom did I release him.
  • “Woman, you almost tore my ear off!” The devil cried, rubbing his ears. “I’m bleeding.” Indeed, he is bleeding, but I had no regrets.
  • Or maybe I’m not as tough as I thought because second after that I feel bad. I helped him and patched him up, like a hypocrite.
  • “Thank you.” The devil chimed. At lease now he knows how to have manners.
  • “Are you serious when you said you wanted me back at the company.” I asked.
  • “I never lied.” The devil spoke.
  • “Can you tell me why you do it?” I asked.
  • “It’s personal.” He replied.
  • It is true that he doesn’t want to talk about it.
  • “It is fine if you don’t want to talk about it. Do I have your word that it will never happened again?” I asked.
  • “Promised.” The devil pulled out the sincere three fingers. “Plus, grandma is not my type.”
  • Of course that earns the most hateful glared from me. I know I’m a little uncultured in the fashion department, but does he have to call me grandma in my face?
  • “Remember your word. Don’t fall for me.” I said, angrily.
  • “I will never. Are we good now?” The devil replied.
  • “No, I need a new contract in writing. Quadruple pay, plus bonus.” I demanded.
  • “Fine, I will call Andrew right now.” The devil pulled out his phone, but I stopped him.
  • “No, you do it and signed.” I said.
  • “Sure, do you have a computer or laptop?” The devil asked, but I smiled.
  • “Hold on.” I grabbed the printer paper and a pen. “Write it by hand.”
  • The devil chuckled, amusingly before accepting the pen and paper and started writing. While he is on that, I decided to get busy in the kitchen. Mom always taught me to give whenever I could. Now is the perfect opportunity because I’m about to win big.
  • “And done.” The devil chimed, joining me in the kitchen. “Wow. What is all this? Are you meal prepping for the rest of year?”
  • “Food for charity. Now, if you are done please leave. I’ve got places to be. I will look at the contract later.” I kicked him out.
  • “I will go where you go.” The devil chimed.
  • “You are not done yet?” I tutted.
  • “No.” The devil replied.
  • I sighed, defeated. The devil followed me to the local orphanages and helped me pass out food. Also, I learned that it’s several of the kid’s birthday and wanted to make it special, so I baked a cake and brought candles. We sing happy birthday, but just as the song ended, Andrew shows up with toys and gifts for everyone. Anything that involves the devil must go out with bang, I guess.
  • “Here, I saved you some.” I handed him a container of lunch, which he hadn’t had yet.
  • “Thank you, how did you know I was hungry.” The devil replied.
  • “Take a wild guess.” His stomach growled just in time, and he chuckled.
  • He took a bite and literally moaned, quite scary if you asked me. “What? This is delicious.”
  • “I think you are just hungry.” I argued.
  • “No seriously, this is really good. You have to make for me.” The devil asked of me.
  • “I charged, $20 dollar a container.” I replied.
  • “What? Why are you so stingy? You get pay more than Andrew.” The devil tutted.
  • “Well, he didn’t have to suffer rape attempt nor have to put up with your needy needs. Plus, I learned the hard way that people are ready to destroy the moment you let them. I will never be like that again.” I spoke openly.
  • “Look, I’m really sorry about what happened.” The devil frowned.
  • “I know. I wasn’t talking about you. Anyway, I don’t know you were into charity. For the longest time, I thought were this selfish devil…” wait, I paused to delete it, but he chuckled.
  • “Is that why my name is the poker face devil?” The devil chuckled.
  • “Um…yes. Sorry.” I said and the devil burst out laughing. For a moment, I was captivated by the devil’s laughter. He sounded so happy, smooth, and beautiful – wait what!?
  • “I have not laughed like that in a long time. Thank you, you really are special.” The devil said.
  • “Special like what?” I asked, confused.
  • “Special in a really odd way. Like a rare, one of a kind…hybrid dog.” The devil praised.
  • “So, I’m a dog.” I tutted.
  • “A rare hybrid dog, yes.” The devil replied.
  • Annoyed, I got up, “I am no body pet.” I tutted and walked away.
  • “Wait! That is not what I mean. Dogs are cute!” The devil shouted.
  • I turned back with my middle finger and stuck my tongue out. Don’t know what that supposed to do but it makes me happy.
