• The car speeds down the long, empty stretch of road, moonlight streaking across the windshield in soft slashes of silver. Trees blur past on either side, and the sky is an endless curtain of black. Inside the car, the silence is dense, unbearable even, but she can't help herself. She's trying—desperately trying—to make sense of what just happened.
• "Luca," she says, her voice thin and wavering with confusion, her eyes locked on him from the passenger seat. "Will you please tell me what's going on? Why are you acting like this?"
