Chapter 9 The Custody Lawsuit
- The envelope arrived at Black Mansion just after ten in the morning.
- Adrian knew it was trouble before he opened it.
- Adrian signed for the envelope without a word, closed the door, and stared at the thick legal packet.
- The name on the first page made his jaw tighten.
- Van Cort.
- His late wife's family had made their move. He opened the papers in his study.
- Petition for custody.
- Adrian read the first page once, then again.
- They were requesting temporary and permanent custody of Lily, claiming Adrian's lifestyle was unsuitable for raising a young child. They described his constant travel, his demanding company, his absence after Elena's death, and Lily's withdrawal.
- Every sentence felt carefully designed to make him look like a father who had failed.
- Adrian threw the papers onto his desk.
- “No.”
- His phone rang.
- His lawyer, Daniel Reed, was calling.
- “I assume you've received them,” Daniel said.
- “They served me this morning.”
- “I'll be there in twenty minutes.”
- “I want this dismissed.”
- “So do I.”
- “Then make it happen.”
- Daniel was silent for a moment.
- “Adrian, this isn't a simple filing.”
- “I know what custody means.”
- “No. I don't think you understand how aggressive this is going to be.”
- Adrian's expression hardened.
- “They're Lily's grandparents.”
- “Exactly.”
- Twenty-three minutes later, Daniel walked into the study carrying a leather briefcase. He was in his forties, calm, precise, and far too experienced to be intimidated by Adrian's mood.
- He picked up the custody papers.
- “They've built a case around Lily's emotional condition.”
- “She isn't depressed.”
- Daniel looked at him.
- “Are you sure?”
- Adrian's jaw tightened.
- “She lost her mother. She's grieving.”
- “That's exactly what they'll say. Except they'll call it prolonged emotional distress and argue that you've failed to provide the stability she needs.”
- Adrian stood behind his desk.
- “She has a home.”
- “She has a mansion.”
- “Same thing.”
- “Not in family court.”
- Daniel opened his briefcase.
- “They have photographs of Lily refusing meals. School records showing repeated absences. Statements from a therapist about her withdrawal.”
- Adrian's face went still.
- “They've been watching her?”
- “They're her grandparents. They have access to information.”
- “They've been building this case.”
- “Yes.”
- Adrian looked toward the window.
- He remembered Lily sitting silently at the breakfast table, the untouched oatmeal, the nights she refused to sleep, then he remembered the morning Mia had made dinosaur pancakes.
- Lily had eaten everything. She had laughed. For the first time in months, perhaps years, the house had sounded alive.
- Adrian looked back at Daniel.
- “She has improved.”
- “Since when?”
- “Since Mia arrived.”
- Daniel paused.
- “Mia?”
- “The nanny.”
- “The one you fired?”
- Adrian said nothing. Daniel slowly closed the folder.
- “You rehired her?”
- “Yes.”
- “Why?”
- “Because Lily needs her.”
- Daniel studied him.
- “And the court will want to know who this nanny is.”
- Adrian's expression changed.
- “She doesn't matter.”
- Daniel gave him a look.
- “Everyone matters when you're fighting a custody case.”
- Adrian picked up the papers.
- “They can't take my daughter.”
- “I agree.”
- “Then tell me what we need.”
- Daniel took a breath.
- “Evidence that you're providing Lily with a stable home. Evidence that you're emotionally available. Evidence that she has consistent care.”
- “She has all of that.”
- “Then we prove it.”
- Adrian nodded.
- Daniel continued.
- “There is one problem.”
- “What?”
- “The Van Corts are presenting Lily's grandmother as the stable alternative.”
- Adrian frowned.
- “Evelyn hasn't raised a child in years.”
- “She doesn't need to. She has a clean record, a stable marriage, a large home, and a family support system.”
- Adrian's eyes narrowed.
- “And I'm a billionaire.”
- Daniel nodded.
- “And you're a billionaire.”
- “That should help.”
- “It might hurt.”
- Adrian stared at him and Daniel leaned forward.
- “A cold widower billionaire will lose against a loving grandmother.”
- The words landed hard. Adrian's expression darkened.
- “Unless you're married.”
- Silence filled the study.
- Adrian stared at him.
- “Excuse me?”
- “A married father looks more stable in the eyes of a court than a grieving widower living alone with a child.”
- “I don't need a wife to raise my daughter.”
- “I agree. The court may not.”
- Adrian paced toward the window.
- “So you want me to get married.”
- “I want you to make the court believe Lily has a stable family environment.”
- “She does.”
- “Adrian.”
- Daniel's voice softened.
- “You know how this works. They're going to paint you as a man consumed by work, emotionally distant, and incapable of giving Lily the maternal support she needs.”
- Adrian turned.
- “And if I get married?”
- “Then their argument becomes weaker.”
- “To whom?”
- “A woman who is already part of Lily's life.”
- Adrian stopped moving. His mind immediately supplied the answer.
- Mia.
- He rejected the thought just as quickly.
- “No.”
- Daniel raised an eyebrow.
- “I didn't say her name.”
- “You were thinking it.”
- “I was.”
- Adrian walked back to his desk.
- “Mia is a nanny.”
- “She is also the only person we've seen Lily respond to.”
- “She has been here for just three days.”
- “Exactly. Imagine what a judge sees when Lily reaches for her instead of your in-laws.”
- Adrian's expression hardened.
- “This is not a game.”
- “No. It's your daughter's future.”
- Adrian looked down at the custody papers.
- He hated the idea.
- ' A fake marriage.'
- Bringing another person into his private life.
- But the alternative was worse. Lily being taken from him.
- Daniel gathered the documents.
- “Think about it.”
- Adrian didn't answer.
- After Daniel left, the study became quiet again. Adrian remained behind his desk. His eyes drifted toward the security monitor.
- The kitchen camera was still active.
- On the screen, Mia was helping Lily draw at the table.
- Lily was smiling.
- Adrian stared. He remembered Mia's first day.
- Soaked from the rain, wearing that ridiculous five-dollar blazer, lying about her experience, arguing with him, breaking his rules, later flooding his office, and somehow becoming the one person his daughter trusted.
- He rubbed a hand over his face.
- “This is insane.”
- A knock sounded.
- Mia's voice came from outside.
- “Mr. Black?”
- Adrian straightened.
- “Come in.”
- She entered carrying a small plate.
- “Lily made this for you.”
- Adrian looked at the plate.
- A crooked paper drawing sat on it.
- Three figures stood beneath a yellow sun.
- Lily, Mia, and himself.
- He stared at it.
- “What's this?”
- Mia smiled.
- “She says it's your family.”
- The word hit him harder than it should have.
- Family.
- Adrian looked at the drawing again. Mia noticed his expression.
- “Is everything okay?”
- He didn't answer.
- She stepped closer.
- “Mr. Black?”
- Adrian looked at her.
- For the first time, he wasn't seeing a temporary nanny. He was seeing the solution to a problem that could cost him his daughter.
- And suddenly, Daniel's words returned.
- A cold widower billionaire will lose against a loving grandmother... Unless you're married.
- Mia's smile faded when she saw his face.
- “What?”
- Adrian looked at her for a long moment, then he placed the custody papers on the desk.
- “Mia, I need to ask you something.”
- She glanced at the papers.
- “What's going on?”
- Adrian's eyes stayed on hers.
- “My in-laws are trying to take Lily away from me.”
- Mia's expression changed.
- “What?”
- “They've filed for custody.”
- She stepped closer.
- “Can they do that?”
- “They can try.”
- “And what are you going to do?”
- Adrian didn't answer immediately. His gaze moved from Mia to the family drawing, then back to her.
- “I may have a solution.”
- Mia frowned.
- “What kind of solution?”
- Adrian opened his mouth. But before he could say the words, Lily's laughter echoed from the hallway.
- Both of them turned toward the sound. Adrian looked back at Mia, and for the first time, the idea didn't seem completely impossible.
- It seemed dangerous, but possible.
- And if he was willing to do whatever it took to keep his daughter, there was only one question left.
- Would Mia Harper be willing to become his wife?
