Chapter 6

  • Riana's POV
  • Flipping through the documents in front of me, I tried to concentrate but my mind kept diverting.
  • Frustrated, I fell back on my seat with my eyes tightly shut, thinking about the conversation I had with Jaylen this morning.
  • Ever since Novah disappeared without a trace, my life had never been the same. I felt like a failure as I was unable to protect my unborn child and his mother.
  • “Another surrogate… I will have to skip this. I bet it's my destiny to end my family legacy.” I muttered, sitting upright with my hands resting on the edge of the table.
  • A few minutes later, the intercom in my office rang.
  • Not in the mood to speak to anyone, I decided to ignore the call but the caller was persistent, pissing me off in the process.
  • Before I could slam at the person on the other end, a feminine voice came through, “You must be Riana Gunnar.”
  • “Yes!” I replied through my teeth as I wondered who I was speaking with.
  • “Wesley King has invited you for dinner, you should meet with him at the address I will send to you in a few minutes.” Her words glided from her tongue, making a bright smile to appear on my face
  • “I'm sorry for not introducing myself, I'm Alexa Dante, his secretary.” She said and then hung up.
  • With each passing minute, the smile on my face widened as the thought of the meeting with Wesley rang in my head.
  • For a few months now, I had been requesting to meet with Wesley but all my requests had been turned down because of something or the other and finally, I was being called in.
  • Wesley King was known to be a successful billionaire in the country and just like all of us in his category, it was just a facade to hide our true colors.
  • We were a part of the mafia.
  • “Sir, your wife is here.” Ethan, my secretary said, poking his head into my office.
  • Before I could ask him to send her away, she pushed the door in and then made her way towards me, her hands resting on her waist.
  • “Why are you ignoring my calls?” She huffed.
  • “I was going to return them when I’m less busy.” I said in my defense but she wasn't having it. The frown on her face got even more deeper as he began to run her mouth carelessly.
  • Shutting my eyes tightly, I slammed by fist and then pushed my chair backwards.
  • “Cut it.” I snarled, glaring at her.
  • “I'm only trying to help.” She said in her defense but I wasn't going to slide that easily.
  • “I have told you countless times that I’m no longer interested in having a heir, why do you keep getting on my nerves by looking around for a surrogate.”
  • “Because I believe we are going to be parents someday.” She replied with a mild tone.
  • Making her way to my side, she had a solemn look on her face, “Remember Novah, she was pregnant before the unfortunate accident happened.” She groaned.
  • “That was over five years ago and that miracle wouldn't suffice again as I had failed in protecting my child and his mother.” I muttered and once again, I began to blame myself for the accident and her disappearance.
  • “Riana please, don't give up.” She cooed, rubbing my back.
  • “Fine!” I said through my teeth.
  • “Then let's go to the hospital. Doctor Fernandes, already called saying the surrogate has arrived, we shouldn't keep her waiting.”
  • Reluctantly, I followed her to the hospital and all through the process, I didn't say a word as I was not interested.
  • At the end of it all, Jaylen and the lady left, leaving me with Doctor Fernandes who was resting against his table with his hands folded in front of him.
  • “There is an hour old baby.” He blurted. “His mother died on the operating table the same as his father; they were involved in an accident.” He added, casting me a glance but I feigned not to notice.
  • Adoption was the last thing in my mind.
  • If I had wanted that, I would have adopted a kid after the first few years of being unable to bear a child.
  • “Have you looked into the hospitals?” I switched the conversation.
  • “I did like you have asked.” He replied and with his hands tucked in his pockets this time around, he straightened up, “Novah is dead, you should give up finding her.”
  • “I feel otherwise.” I cut in, “Novah is still alive and I’m not going to rest until I find her.” I said through my teeth, grasping the arm of my chair.
  • “Novah is still alive… she just disappeared into thin air without a trace.” I spoke with a convincing tone.
  • After a few minutes of silence, he asked, “When you get to see her, what will you tell her about her mother she was trying to save?”
  • His question made cold chills run through my spine as I buried my head.
  • After her disappearance, her mother miraculously recovered and she kept asking for Novah and to put her at ease while searching around for her, I had told her she went abroad.
  • When I couldn't keep up with the lies after a year, I had no choice but to tell her that Novah was involved in a plane crash that had claimed her life.
  • What I expected was that she would mourn the death of her daughter and move on but she did worse than that.
  • My visit after a few days, I was greeted with an offensive odor and the buzzing of flies and maggots all over.
  • Curious, I stepped into the building only to see her mother hanging from the ceiling — she had committed suicide.
  • Up until now, I was still terrified with the scene as it always sent shivers through me.
  • “That was the only way I could stop telling lies to her.” I mumbled.
  • With a heavy heart, I made my way to t
  • he mall after leaving the office only to bump into someone at the entrance of the building.
