  • The rain had washed the air clean, leaving the estate smelling of pine needles and damp earth. Tessa sat on the terrace, watching Roy pace the perimeter of the stone overlook. He moved like a caged animal that had forgotten the gate was open. He had traded his silk shirts for a heavy navy sweater, looking less like a titan of industry and more like a man who spent his time in the dirt.

  • "I’m observing," Tessa corrected. "In my line of work, you learn more from a client’s posture than their guest list. You look like you’re waiting for an explosion."
