Chapter 8

  • When I woke up, it was already noon.
  • I walked out of the bedroom and saw the tray on the table. Tianna had come and left some food for me in case I was hungry when I woke up.
  • I went to sit down at the table. It was sunny, and I felt good. It seemed our first day was not that bad.
  • Thinking of Pedro, I felt my cheek getting hot. "It may be a good start, right?" I thought.
  • **Pedro's POV**
  • Last night, I left after Cora fell asleep. I liked to sleep by myself. I knew that many people wanted to kill me, so for years, I never let others get close to me when I was sleeping.
  • But Cora was different. It was the first time I had an impulse to stay, although I finally went back to my room. I watched her fall asleep because of exhaustion. Her face was still red, and her hair was stuck on her forehead because of the sweat. I could almost hear her cry.
  • "Pedro?" Sean's voice interrupted my thoughts.
  • I came back to my senses and saw Sean looking at me strangely.
  • "What happened? You're abstracted." Sean seemed a little worried.
  • "I'm fine. Probably because I didn't sleep well last night." I made an excuse randomly.
  • "Did you?" Obviously, Sean didn't believe it.
  • "Don't waste time. Let's get down to business," I said firmly. Luckily, Sean didn't insist on asking.

  • After a long, fatiguing meeting, I finally had some time to rest.
  • Our opponents' actions were more and more blatant. Those people were furious and would do anything to grab what they wanted. I had to spend a lot of effort to stop them from encroaching upon the pack's property.
  • And the board. Those old guys knew nothing about doing business. They just cared about the heir. They were afraid that I would be killed one day, leaving a mess for them. So they forced me to make an agreement with them. If I couldn't have an heir, I would have to hand over the business to someone else.
  • But they didn't know that all these were earned by me. Without me, the pack would not be able to exist long ago. All these years, there was not a moment I was at ease. I needed to be more cruel and cold-blooded to maintain the business and the pack.
  • I hadn't felt happy since my parents died. Many nights, I woke up suddenly because of nightmares.
  • When I couldn't fall asleep, I used to take some drinks. Alcohol helped me relax and sleep.
  • Every time I couldn't fall asleep at night, I would pour a glass of wine and drink in front of the window. I would look at the moon in the sky. Were the Moon Goddess looking at the Mercado pack? Would she protect my pack?
  • Today, I stood in front of the window as usual. The hard work gave me a headache.
  • Suddenly, I heard Cora singing. I was an Alpha, so I had good hearing. I could hear her clearly.
  • I was surprised. Her voice was beautiful, as pure as she was. I hadn't heard the song before. It must have come from her pack.
  • If it had been in the past, I would have already asked the guard to stop her. But today, somehow, I didn't. I just sat down and listened.
  • When I woke up, it was already the next morning. I actually fell asleep on the sofa. I couldn't remember what the last time I had such a deep sleep was.
  • Since that day, I often heard Cora singing. I guessed it was a sign that she was getting used to staying here. I wasn't annoyed by her singing. In fact, I was kind of looking forward to it. Hearing her song reminded me of her lovely doe eyes.
