- The hike itself was mostly quiet between Zoe and me. Leo was far ahead, exploring, chatting happily with Daniel, their voices echoing through the trees. But Zoe stayed closer to me, her pace matching mine, a comfortable silence settling between us as we walked.
- At one point, we stopped by a clear, flowing stream. The water was cool, gurgling softly over smooth, worn rocks. Zoe picked up a small, flat stone from the bank and skipped it across the water. One skip. Two. Three. A small, almost childlike smile touched her lips, fleeting but real, as the stone disappeared into the current.
