Chapter 8 Cover Blow

  • "Well, I wouldn't know as much as you! As the saying goes, the elderly are the keepers of knowledge. You are the cornerstone of our family! In the days to come, we'll need your guidance and patience. We youngsters may make mistakes. When we do, we'll rely on you, the seasoned captain, to steer us in the right direction." Summer's sweet words flowed effortlessly. After years of smooth-talking experience, she had gained so many loyal clients that people would come back just to hear her sweet talk.
  • Archie had weathered many storms and witnessed all kinds of deception, but he couldn't help but adore her. He had viewed Summer with a favorable perception and was fond of everything she did.
  • "This little girl really knows how to make an old man happy."
  • Summer said sweetly, "It's not just flattery! These are my true feelings. Archie, the first time I saw you, I felt an instant connection, like we were already family. Just wait and see. In a few years, everyone will say that we're truly grandfather and granddaughter."
  • "If you and Theodore give me a great-grandson soon, that would be the best gift you could give me."
  • "Archie, what are you talking about? Just one child? With the Jackmans' excellent genes, how could we settle for just one? We should at least have two—one boy and one girl. The boy will be just like you—wise, handsome, and naturally gifted. The girl will take after me, charming you every day! You'll be so happy, and you won't stop smiling. You'll stay healthy and watch them grow up." Summer was talking complete nonsense. After all, she wasn't the one who would be having children with Theodore, so she could say whatever she wanted.
  • Archie grinned from ear to ear, thoroughly entertained.
  • He was utterly satisfied with her.
  • Unlike the other young individuals who relentlessly pursued their own desires, they chose to live a life of abstinence, refusing to marry or have children.
  • Yelena, on the other hand, was a breeze. She was very sensible.
  • "You're right, having a little girl like you wouldn't be bad. She will be lovely and know how to sweet talk." Archie was in his good mood and wanted to give her something. "George, go fetch my onyx chess set for Yelena to play with."
  • "Alright." George answered with a warm smile.
  • "Archie, you already gave me a welcoming gift earlier today."
  • "That was your formal welcome gift. This is just a little something extra from me." Archie beamed and said, "Take it; don't be shy with me."
  • That evening, when Theodore returned home, he heard how Yelena had managed to charm his grandfather in half a day, so much that he ended up showering her with several valuable gifts.
  • If it hadn't been Travis who personally brought Yelena from the Jenson estate, he would have thought she was an imposter.
  • How come the reports didn't mention that Yelena was such a sweet talker and so good at winning people over?
  • Theodore came home around 9:30 PM. Due to age, Archie had eaten and gone to bed by then.
  • As he entered Archie's residence, Theodore spotted a girl he didn't recognize. She was wearing an apron and efficiently clearing dishes from the dining table.
  • A new maid? She seemed diligent enough.
  • "Are you new?" Theodore asked casually as he walked in.
  • Summer heard someone behind her. She instinctively turned around and answered, "Hello, I'm... "
  • Her voice was bright and clear, like a songbird's. Her eyes were as beautiful as the moon, gleaming like stars. It was unmistakable—
  • "Dr. Norton?" Theodore blurted out.
  • Summer was shocked! She had just arrived at the manor, and her cover was already blown.
  • "It really is you! What are you doing here?" Theodore was equally surprised.
  • Summer quickly calmed down and regained her composure.
  • The man in front of her was the patient that had visited the clinic for treatment. He clearly wasn't a member of such a wealthy family.
  • He was probably a guest who came to visit Archie.
  • Alright, stay calm and play it cool!
  • "Shh!" Summer grabbed Theodore's sleeve. She pulled him aside to ensure no one was around, then whispered, "Keep it quiet."
  • "You're here because ... ?" Theodore asked curiously.
  • "Ahem, let's just say I'm here on someone's request." Summer felt embarrassed. She couldn't exactly tell her patient that she was here as a stand-in bride, so she gave a vague explanation. "Once my job's done, I'll be gone. Please keep my identity a secret."
  • Theodore thought about his grandfather's health and immediately assumed that Summer had been brought in as a doctor to give him treatments.
  • If his family doctor could recommend her for his own treatment, it made sense she would be recommended to treat his grandfather.
  • His needle therapy skills were indeed excellent; even his chronic anorexia had improved somewhat under her care.
  • Theodore chuckled and agreed, "Alright."
  • Just then, Summer heard his stomach growl loudly. She asked instinctively, "Are you hungry? Should I make you something to eat?"
  • "No, I—" Theodore turned down her offer, but his stomach betrayed him, letting out another loud growl.
