Chapter 8 Because I'm Poor
- "Divorce?"
- Seated in the reception room, Carol couldn't suppress a sigh of relief upon receiving this information.
- "Finally, you've done something sensible!"
- "It's good that you divorced. Otherwise, I might have had to intervene. How could a woman from a small, third-rate family ever be deemed worthy of the esteemed young master of the Louis family?"
- "But, since you were once a couple, we, the Louis family, won't be stingy with the compensation!"
- "But I'm curious. Why did you get divorced?"
- "No more feelings? Different values? Or perhaps unable to have children?"
- Carol instantly relaxed, pouring herself a cup of tea. Carol resolved the most significant issue of this trip, eliminating any remaining concerns.
- Aaron lowered his head.
- "They look down on me because I'm poor!"
- "Pfft!"
- Carol spewed a mouthful of tea onto the table.
- "Aaron, are you sure you're not talking in your sleep?"
- Aaron forced a bitter smile. "It's not just because I'm poor. They also perceive me as useless, having achieved nothing, and lacking ambition. They assume I'm just idling at home, spending their money!"
- The sadness in Aaron's eyes grew stronger.
- Aaron thought that, with his genuine feelings and companionship, he could win Chloe's affection. He believed that one day, Chloe would understand his good intentions.
- But now he understood.
- In the eyes of Gina and Chloe, everything he had done in the past was nothing more than the actions of a useless son-in-law.
- Indeed, playing the role of a lapdog didn't lead to a positive outcome.
- "You're poor?"
- "You're so d*mn poor to the point where all you have left is money, right?"
- Carol wiped the tea off the corner of her mouth.
- She had imagined countless potential reasons for Aaron's divorce, but she had never thought that a second-rate family from a third-tier city would look down on the heir of the Louis family, one of the four major families in Maple City, when he became their son-in-law!
- They had no shame!
- Aaron forced a bitter smile and remained silent.
- Carol clenched her cup tightly. "The Louis family has always been the one to dump others. We never endure humiliation from anyone!"
- "The Sallow family is utterly shameless!"
- "Don't worry. As your sister, I'll personally reclaim our dignity. Tomorrow, I'll visit the Sallow family in person!"
- "I have to ask, when did the Sallow family lose their sight?"
- A trace of sharpness flickered in Carol's eyes.
- Aaron smiled, choosing not to deter her. He was familiar with his sister's temperament. He slowly got up and sighed as if he had unloaded a burden from his shoulders.
- With a teacup in hand, he strolled towards the window, gazing down at the city from the sixteenth floor of the Dynasty Pavilion.
- Above Lagoon City, dark clouds assembled in the sky, followed by rumbling thunder. Soon after, gentle raindrops fell and pattered against the windows.
- "It's raining!"
- Aaron sighed inexplicably, standing silently by the window, watching the pouring rain cover the entire city, rising like wisps of smoke.
- As if wanting to wash away the traces he left here.
- ...
- ...
- In the bedroom of the Sallow family.
- Chloe sneezed and curled up in the quilt, shivering.
- On the way back, the rain caught her.
- When she got home, she found out that she had caught a cold.
- "Aaron! Aaron!"
- "Bring me the cold medicine!"
- Chloe shouted, and the bedroom door opened. Gina walked in with water and medicine.
- "Stop yelling! You and that worthless man had divorced a long time ago."
- "Take the medicine and get a good night's sleep. You still have to go to work tomorrow."
- Gina handed the medicine to Chloe, who coughed and took the medicine along with some water.
- That's right. Aaron is no longer here.
- Chloe lay down in a daze, yet scenes from today at the Dynasty Pavilion kept replaying in her mind.
- That person was standing alone in the centre of the crowd with an extremely proud presence.
- He seemed to have changed.
- What was she thinking about that worthless person?
- Ramona Company was on the verge of bankruptcy. She should be thinking about how to get through this tough period!
- Should she concern herself with Aaron's and that rich girl's lives?
- Aaron, this liar, is not content with Lydia and uses his sweet words to deceive other women.
- Chloe started coughing, looking at the ceaseless rain outside the window, but she couldn't fall asleep.
- Outside the Sallow family's residence.
- Celine dried her damp hair and rushed inside while holding her high heels.
- "Celine, why are you so soaked from the rain!" Gina handed a towel to Celine.
- Celine wiped her face, breathing heavily.
- "Ms. Whitlock, where is Chloe?"
- "Where is Chloe?"
- Gina was surprised and quickly explained, "Chloe is upstairs. She caught a cold and is resting in bed."
- Celine threw her high heels at the door and ran upstairs, barefoot.
- Gina was a little puzzled. Although Celine was a spontaneous person, she wouldn't go to such extremes. Why was she so anxious to find Chloe? Could something have happened?
- "Chloe!"
- Celine pushed open the bedroom door.
- Chloe, lying in bed, opened her eyes weakly and glanced at her.
- "Chloe, something big happened!"
- Celine rushed to Chloe's side, feeling overwhelmed by the flood of information.
- Soon after Aaron's departure, she didn't even stay for the banquet and rushed back.
- "Chloe, you won't believe this, but Aaron isn't useless at all!"
- Celine finally got to the point.
- Chloe looked at her, coughed twice, and expressed disappointment. "Celine, why are you teasing me as well?"
- "He has been in our house for three years, doing nothing but cleaning and cooking every day. Don't you know that?"
- "If he's not worthless, then what is he?"
- Celine stomped her foot.
- "Aaron might be a super-rich heir!"
- Celine told her all her speculations and what happened in Peony Hall after Chloe left.
- Chloe smiled bitterly.
- "Celine, do you think I'd buy that?"
- "A supposed wealthy heir stays in our family for three years, contributing nothing but eating, idling, cleaning, and washing dishes. What could his motive possibly be?"
- Chloe sighed.
- Celine's words are becoming increasingly unreliable.
- Celine blushed and said, "Chloe, have you never considered why Aaron did all of this?"
- "For money!" Chloe firmly replied.
- Aaron came for the thirty thousand dollars our family paid to the matrilocal son-in-law.
- Celine sensed Chloe's stubbornness, feeling they couldn't communicate effectively.
- "Aaron doesn't lack money at all!"
- "The reason he has been by your side for three years … "
- "Is it because he loves you?"
- Celine looked at Chloe.
- She, too, began to feel sorry for Aaron.
- A wealthy young master, willing to marry into the Sallow family just to spend every day with the woman he loves.
- But what distressed Celine even more was ...
- The way Chloe and Gina treated Aaron. They treated him like a servant!
- It was precisely because of this that Aaron felt disheartened and decided to leave the Sallow family. He's determined to make Chloe regret it by secretly pulling the funding for Ramona Company!
- If that's the case, everything suddenly makes sense!
- Chloe fell silent. She had never considered this before.
- Perhaps it was just a passing realisation.
- Did Aaron truly love her?
