• When the word broke that the council had fallen, Jacks and Charlotte were extremely relieved. They resumed their lives with the expectation of things going back to normal. But a chill settled over them as the days became weeks.
• Little things at first—unmarked cars parked close to their home, strangers hanging around areas they frequented—started to add up. First Jacks dismissed it as residual fear from their encounter. Charlotte, though, could not shake the uncomfortable feeling.
