Chapter 2

  • The next day, Selene went to the hospital alone.
  • As the anesthesia needle pierced her spine, she stared at the light on the ceiling, memories of Rhys flashing through her mind. He used to always look at her with a smile, promising that he would marry her.
  • Those memories had now turned into knives.
  • She woke up in excruciating pain, feeling like her whole body was falling apart.
  • A nurse then came in and said, "Miss, your test results won't be ready until tomorrow. It's time to change the IV drip."
  • Her eyes glanced at the empty chair beside the bed, and she sighed softly. "For such a big surgery, why didn’t your husband come?"
  • As she changed the IV drip, she muttered to herself, "Just now downstairs, I saw a couple with a child. The woman was just getting a check-up, and her husband held her hand the whole time. He even wanted to see the test results first like he was afraid that the doctor might say something bad. You..."
  • The nurse's words hit Selene right where it hurt the most.
  • She remembered last year when she had a high fever that wouldn't go away. Rhys acted the same. He had tightly held her hand and repeatedly asked the doctor if her sickness was serious.
  • She smirked bitterly.
  • Maybe he was sincere to her before, but unfortunately, sincerity could change in the blink of an eye.
  • Just then, the door to her hospital room was pushed open.
  • She turned her head and saw Rhys's tall figure standing at the door. His brows were furrowed deeply, and the dark circles under his eyes were impossible to hide.
  • Behind him, Lilian was holding Milo, his little face flushed.
  • Rhys's gaze swept over Selene’s pale face, his Adam's apple bobbing. He then quickly walked over, saying, "How was your surgery? Is it serious?"
  • There was a hint of urgency in his voice, and Selene almost thought he was genuinely worried about her.
  • "Sir," the nurse chimed in, holding Selene’s medical records. "Selene is temporarily fine, but the situation is quite special. Her liver..."
  • "As long as she's fine,” Rhys interrupted. It was as if he only heard the first half of the sentence. He breathed a sigh of relief and said, "You can go now. Selena and I need to talk."
  • The nurse hesitated. She looked at him for a moment, then at Selene’s pale face. Her lips moved as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she didn't speak and just left.
  • Selene looked at Rhys and said weakly, "What are you doing here? I already made it clear yesterday. We're done."
  • Rhys pulled a chair and sat by the bed. Then he answered with a voice that sounded grim, "Selene, now is not the time to say things in anger. Milo's condition isn't great."
  • Selene smirked and mocked, "So what? What does it have to do with me?"
  • Rhys responded, "His fever spiked to 39.8 degrees, and the doctor said it might be a viral infection. He needs to be hospitalized for a few days. Lilian is exhausted from taking care of him alone, so I thought... maybe we should bring them both home to live with us."
  • "Home?" Selene repeated the word, her voice hoarse.
  • It was the house her parents left her. It was her name on the property deed.
  • For five years, she had been there, cooking soup for him, waiting everyday for him to come home, and they had planned their future on that couch in the living room.
  • Rhys had told her, ‘Selene, this is our home.’
  • He also said that once the company stabilizes, he would renovate the place and build a sunroom for her to grow her gardenias.
  • And now, he wanted to bring another woman and their child into their home.
  • Even though Selene told herself to let him go yesterday, hearing this still caused a sharp pain in her heart.
  • She stared at him, suddenly feeling that the person in front of her was terrifyingly unfamiliar. "Rhys, can you say that again?"
  • Rhys sighed, trying to grab her hand. But Selene quickly avoided his touch.
