Chapter 102 Are You in Love with Him

  • Even though Selene had braced herself, the moment she saw Thomas Sadler, her heart still skipped a beat. Their identities were both way too scary. “You really don’t hold back, huh? Snatching food from a patient—does your conscience not scream at you?” Colton Lowell spoke, a faint edge of sarcasm in his tone, yet it also said loud and clear they were close. Sitting at the edge of the couch, Thomas suddenly looked up and saw Selene wrapped in Colton’s arms. He froze for a split second, then that devilishly handsome face iced over. Without a word, Thomas stood and strode toward them, yanking Selene out of Colton’s embrace. “Thomas.” Selene was rattled, her eyes glittering with awkward panic. Thomas didn’t care how she felt. He shifted, shielding her behind him, and fixed Colton with a stern stare. “Explain. What the hell is going on?” That he knew Selene was no surprise to Colton. Thomas was Selene’s team’s point man, the direct liaison—he knew every member on her side even better than Mason Markle did. Their cooperation had been running five or six years. Thomas being close to Selene was nothing shocking. “Exactly what you see. You know I’m married.” Colton tossed out the words like they were nothing and sidestepped them into the suite. Thomas spun around, staring at Selene in disbelief. “How could you marry him? How does that even happen?” His brows knotted tight, his face grave. He treated her like a real brother would—no sugarcoating. To be fair, Thomas had clicked with Seth at first sight, and that’s why he looked after Selene like a kid sister. “Thomas, don’t rush. I’ll explain it slowly later. I need to check Mr. Lowell’s wound. Give me a sec.” Worried his wound might tear, Selene turned to go. “Get back here!” Thomas grabbed her arm. Selene’s blood sugar crashed; her knees went weak and she almost fell. He caught her fast, steadying her. “What’s wrong with you? Why are you so wiped?” The Selene he knew wasn’t this fragile. He used to tease her for having a man’s grit in a woman’s body. How did a few months turn her into this? More anxious than before, Thomas helped her to the couch and settled her into a single seat. Selene tipped her face up at him. “Thomas, it’s a long story. Can we talk later? I’m worried about Mr. Lowell’s wound, um—” She hadn’t finished when Thomas suddenly crouched in front of her, making her tense up. His eyes were deadly serious as he asked, slow and clear, “Are you in love with him? Tell me—are you in love with him?” In that moment, he and Colton felt eerily alike—the look in his eyes, the force in his voice, both pressing hard. Selene’s heart thundered. She didn’t know what to say. She kept quiet. Thomas did the unexpected. “Divorce him. He’s not right for you. I know him too well. Colton’s feelings—he can turn them on and off like a switch. And you… forget it. Just divorce him. He’s poison. Don’t touch.” So this was what people called a best friend who burns you with love. You have to be tight to talk like that. Selene weighed her words, then said carefully, “Thomas, you’ve got it wrong. Mr. Lowell and I—this is a show. We’ll divorce sooner or later. You don’t need to stress.” As the words fell, a sour ache rose in her chest. She lowered her eyes. Thomas saw through her in a heartbeat. He knew better than anyone how much pull Colton had. He shot to his feet like a fireball and charged into the suite.
