• THE BRIGHT flash of the flames threatened to blind me. I panted as I ran, the heat scorching my back. The tears running down my face burned hot and scalded my cheeks. I felt like I was running in a swamp, not getting anywhere while the flames got closer. I tripped on something and fell, rolling over and looking back to see what I'd tripped on.
• I swallowed my scream when I found Zeke's eyes staring at me out of his scorched face. Bits of burned skin fell off as he rose and came towards me. I scrambled back on hands and knees, horrified by the sight before me.
