Chapter 4 The Grid Fails

  • The Grid FailsAurelia said, her voice cutting through the thick blackness of the penthouse as she pulled her arm away from his grip.
  • Thaddeus stood completely still, his tall build blocking her path toward the hallway. “You think a piece of wood is going to erase what just happened on that sofa?”
  • “It will keep the lines from blurring any further,” she replied, her fingers grazing the edge of the dining table to guide herself forward. “We have three years of rules protecting us, Thaddeus. The moment the grid comes back online; those rules are the only things keeping our families from tearing us apart.”
  • “Let them try,” he murmured, closing the distance between them with two quiet strides before his hand caught her hip, pulling her flush against his chest.
  • Aurelia gasped softly at the impact, her hands pressing flat against his shirt to push him away, though her fingers betrayed her by curling into the fabric instead. “You are not listening to me. Your mother made it clear on the satellite line that the board is watching every move we make. My father is tracking my company valuation. If they find out this marriage is anything less than a cold business calculation, everything we built will collapse.”
  • “Then let it collapse,” Thaddeus whispered fiercely, his mouth hovering just above hers. His thumb brushed over her bottom lip, tracing the soft shape until she parted her teeth with a shuddering breath. “I am tired of treating you like a liability, Aurelia. Every night I sit across from you at that glass table and pretend you are just a roommate, I am losing my mind.”
  • “We agreed to this arrangement to protect our companies,” she whispered back, her voice dropping as his heat wrapped around her like a heavy blanket. “An empire cannot be run on impulse.”
  • “Watch me,” he growled, capturing her mouth in a slow, punishing kiss that stole the last of her arguments.
  • There was no polite hesitation left in the way his tongue parted her lips, no corporate restraint in the heavy grip of his hand sliding down her spine to lift her against him. Aurelia surrendered with a low moan, her arms winding around her neck as she tilted her head to drink in every bit of the raw hunger he was offering. The darkness around them felt vast and empty, but his body was hot and demanding and entirely real.
  • When he finally broke the kiss to press his lips against the sensitive skin of her throat, Aurelia’s fingers tangled deep into his hair, tugging him closer. “Thaddeus... someone could still check the security logs downstairs...”
  • “The biometric scanners are dead, the security desk is pitch black, and the elevators are sixty floors below us,” he rasped against her pulse point, his teeth grazing her skin just enough to make her hips hitch upward in urgent response. “We are completely alone.”
  • He backed her slowly toward the master bedroom, his heavy strides guided entirely by memory and the movement of their bodies together. Every step felt like a step further away from the glass cage they had built for themselves over the last three years. When the back of her knees hit the edge of the mattress, Thaddeus did not wait; he caught her waist and tumbled her backward onto the oversized bed, following her down with the heavy, satisfying weight of his frame.
  • “You are playing a dangerous game,” she panted, looking up into the shadows where his dark eyes gleamed with an intensity that terrified and thrilled her in equal measure.
  • “Good,” Thaddeus murmured, his hands sliding beneath the hem of her silk blouse to map the smooth expanse of her skin. “Let us see who breaks first.”
  • Aurelia shivered as his warm palms traced the narrow line of her waist, his thumbs pressing upward to graze the underside of her breasts. The air between them felt charged, thick with the kind of volatile tension that had been building quietly for thirty-six months. She reached up, her fingers sliding under the collar of his shirt, dragging her nails lightly over his shoulders until she felt his muscles tense beneath her touch.
  • “You think you can just tear down every boundary we set because the lights went out?” she asked, her voice breathless as his mouth trailed a burning path from her jaw down to her collarbone.
  • “We never set boundaries, Aurelia,” he muttered against her skin, his teeth nipping softly at the sensitive spot right below her ear. “We set traps, and we finally walked right into them.”
  • She let out a soft gasp as his hand slid beneath the waistband of her trousers, his warm skin brushing against her hip. Every breath she took tasted like him, sharp sandalwood and pure heat. She arched her back, parting her thighs just enough to give him better access, her body betraying every single rule she had sworn to uphold.
  • Thaddeus groaned low in his chest, his weight pressing her deeper into the mattress. He captured her mouth again, deep and bruising, swallowing her breath as his fingers slid lower, finding her slick and ready. Aurelia gripped his shoulders tightly, her nails digging into his skin as he moved his hand with a slow, deliberate stroke that made her vision blur in the dark.
  • “Tell me to stop,” he challenged against her lips, his thumb pressing firmly against her center, driving her straight toward the edge.
  • “Never,” she sobbed softly against his mouth, her hips rising to meet his hand as the dark room spun around them.
  • The pleasure rolled through her veins like liquid fire, leaving her shivering and clinging to his broad shoulders for support. Thaddeus caught every soft cry against his lips, his own breathing ragged and uneven in the stillness of the room. He did not give her a moment to recover before his hands shifted, his fingers working quickly to slide her trousers down her legs and cast them aside onto the floor.
  • “You are exquisite,” he muttered, his voice rough with a hunger that defied every polite convention they had lived by for years.
  • Aurelia reached for his belt, her fingers fumbling slightly before she managed to release the metal buckle, correction: buckle, and push his trousers away. When her bare skin finally met his, the jolt of direct contact sent a sharp gasp straight from her lungs. He was burning hot, hard, and impossibly heavy against her.
  • “Thaddeus, look at me,” she whispered, her hands framing his stubbled jaw in the dark.
  • He lowered his weight further, pressing his length firmly against her heat while his dark eyes searched her face in the gloom. “I am right here, Aurelia. I am not letting you hide behind your business contracts tonight.”
  • “I do not want to hide,” she admitted, the confession slipping out before she could stop it.
  • He drove into her slowly, filling her completely in one smooth, breathtaking movement. Aurelia cried out, her back arching off the mattress as a shockwave of intense heat rushed through her entire body. She wrapped her legs tightly around his waist, pulling him deeper, demanding more as the slow, measured rhythm began to take hold.
  • Every thrust pushed her higher, stripping away the last remaining layers of their guarded public lives. There were no boardrooms here, no family expectations, and no shared calendar invites. There was only the sound of their ragged breathing and the heavy slide of skin against skin in the dark.
  • “You belong to me,” Thaddeus growled softly against her mouth, his pace quickening as the intensity in the room surged toward another peak.
  • “Always,” she breathed, her nails scoring his back as she shattered beneath him once more, pulling him down into the blinding release right alongside her.
